Panerai Warranty: Guide to Panerai Eight-Year Extended Warranty

How does the Panerai warranty works? What does it cover and how long is the warranty of Panerai watches?

In this complete guide, we will go into detail about everything you need to know about the Panerai warranty.

Panerai eight-year Warranty

Panerai announced that it has extended its manufacturer’s warranty on all watches to eight years, which brings the brand up to par with some of the best brands in the world. The industry standard for warranty is two years, but to make the brand more competitive on the market, and to show that the brand stands proudly behind its watches, Panerai now offers an eight-year warranty for all its watches.

Panerai called it Pam.Guard Program. The name derives from the fact that the reference number of Panerai watches begins with the letters PAM.

The PAM-Guard program of eight years of warranty applies to watches sold two years from November 26, which is when Panerai officially launched the program.

In order to enjoy the eight-year warranty, you must register your watch in their program online. When you register your watch, you will, in some cases, be sent invitations, newsletters, and gifts. You can access the Pam.Guard program online with most devices.

The CEO of Panerai Jean-Marc Pontroué stated after presenting the news of the extended warranty that the new commitment “was made possible by the very high level of technical efficiency and reliability achieved by watches produced by the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel”.

Furthermore, the CEO said the initiative represented a “proactive form of engagement with consumers and at the same time a way to strengthen the sense of belonging to the Panerai community”. “With this long-term vision, extending the international limited warranty up to eight years is a natural, virtually inevitable step.

The Pam.Guard interface is accessible through multiple devices and formats, and can also be activated at Panerai and authorized retailers’ boutiques.

Note that you must apply for the extended warranty, and it is not always that it is approved for various reasons. Primarily if your watch is not eligible for an extended warranty, for example, if it is too old. You apply for the extended warranty at services.panerai.com. In order to enjoy the warranty, you must allow Panerai to use your personal information to receive communications from Panerai about products or services. This is obviously an effective way for Panerai to build customer relationships and connect with its customers directly rather than via its official retailers.

Panerai Warranty

Panerai states: ”We may send you marketing information using e-mail, text, telephone, or post. We may also use your personal information to deliver personalized messages or advertising on social media or other digital platforms.”

To learn how Panerai handles your personal information, you can have a look at the Panerai Privacy Policy. You can, of course, opt out of this at any time thereafter.

The standard Panerai warranty is two years, but if your watch is successfully approved after the application of a warranty extension under the Panerai Pam.Guard program, your Panerai will be able to enjoy an extended Panerai International Limited Warranty for a maximum of 6 years.

Panerai highlights that under no circumstances can the Panerai International Limited Warranty cannot exceed 8 years.

Panerai 8 year warranty

NOTE:

The warranty is connected to the watch and not a person. The warranty follows the watch and not the owner, and therefore, it does not matter if you are the original buyer of the watch. Keep in mind that the PAM.guard program warranty extension is done through a personal account, and this is registered to the account of the creator.

Panerai states that participation in the Panerai Pam.Guard program may not be sold, transferred or assigned to, or shared with, anyone else. If Panerai finds any abusive or fraudulent activity related to Panerai Pam.Guard program, and/or a violation of its terms, as determined by Panerai in its sole discretion, they reserve the right to make any adjustments to, including termination of, your benefits under the Panerai Pam.Guard program.

Panerai reserves the right to modify or restrict any aspect of the Panerai Pam.Guard program (including its services and/or benefits) without notice. Any such changes would be stated in an updated version of these terms on our website.

Do also note, however, that in some cases, Panerai can ask you to provide additional information and/or related documentation about your purchase (e.g., purchase invoice, original Panerai International Limited Warranty, etc, when you apply for the extended warranty. If you are not able to provide the requested documentation, Panerai may deny your application. The most important part, however, is always that you have the original warranty card.

You can check the expiry date of the Panerai International Limited Warranty by consulting your watch profile in your Panerai customer account online, or, if you prefer, you can call a Panerai call center.

Panerai warranty terms and conditions

As with all warranties, terms and conditions apply to the Panerai warranty. The same conditions apply to the two-year warranty as it does with the extended warranty.

Do note that the terms and conditions of the Panerai Pam.Guard program or the original 2-year Panerai International Limited Warranty do not affect your rights as a consumer under applicable local law in which country the watch was purchased.

Panerai Warranty

When can you apply for an extended Panerai warranty?

You can apply for the extended warranty at any time via the Panerai Pam.Guard program during the time your original two-year warranty is still valid. This means that you have two years from the date of purchase to apply for the extended warranty.

Reasons why your application for an extended Panerai warranty may be denied

As mentioned, you apply for an extended warranty at Panerai. For various reasons, your application may be denied. Panerai describes it as follows ”Warranty Extension, may be denied by Panerai at its sole discretion for any reason, including without limitation”. Here are the reasons why your application may be denied:

  • If you are not registered as a participant in the Panerai Pam.Guard program
  • If you apply for a Warranty Extension outside the original 2-year Panerai International Limited Warranty period
  • If you apply for a warranty extension and your watch is not eligible for an extended warranty, for example, if it is a “not for sale” watch according to Panerai records -for example, a prototype.
  • If you are not a bona fide final customer or in case of abuse.
  • If you apply for the warranty extension and the reference number of your Panerai does not correspond to the original reference number recorded by Panerai (could be signs that your watch has been tampered with or is not original).
  • If you cannot provide additional information or documentation about your purchase, for example, purchase invoice, original Panerai  International Limited Warranty, etc.
  • If participation in the Panerai Pam.Guard program is canceled by Panerai or you.
  • If you do not agree to receive marketing information at the time of application for the warranty extension

Note that Panerai reserves the right to cancel your participation in the Panerai Pam-Guard program at any time after approval, for any of the reasons listed above or other reasons that Panerai finds relevant.

If you wish to cancel your participation in the Pam-Guard program, you can send an email to dataprotection@panerai.com.

Requirements

Panerai requires that you are 18 years or older to register for the Panerai Pam.Guard program.

In order to register if you are 13 years of age or older, you must have the consent of your parents or legal guardians prior to registration.

When you register, you agree that you are 18 years or older or that you have your parent or legal guardians’ consent if you are between 13 and 18. When you register, you create a profile inside the portal.

Have in mind that the Panerai Pam.Guard program is limited to individuals only and to one account per individual. This does not mean that you can only register one Panerai watch from your account.

Panerai Serial Numbers: A Complete Guide

All watches have serial numbers. The only thing is that different brands use different types of serial numbers, and use different formats to come up with their serial numbers. Serial numbers are not to be confused with reference numbers, which is a way to refer to specific watch models, and similar to serial numbers, reference numbers are created using different formats across different brands.

Serial numbers are a unique number that each watch has, and each watch follows a specific serial number format depending on the production year. Panerai uses one format of creating serial numbers, and parts of these serial numbers can be used to identify the year of which the watch was produced.

Panerai serial numbers

As such, serial numbers are used to identify a specific timepiece and can be viewed as a personal security number that no other watch than one specific piece has. Therefore, serial numbers have different usage areas, but they come specifically handy when leaving a watch to service, but they can also be helpful when a watch has been stolen, so you can know whether a watch is your specific piece.

Panerai

In this article, we’ll present Panerai serial numbers and talk a little about the format that Panerai serial numbers use. In particular, we’ll focus on the way Panerai serial numbers are structured and formatted, and maybe most importantly, list Panerai serial numbers to help you identify the year in which your Panerai watch was manufactured.

Do note that the serial numbers can only give an estimate of when your Panerai watch was made, and it can, of course, be a bit more difficult to identify the specific year your Panerai watch was made if it’s an older (vintage) piece.

Panerai serial numbers

Panerai serial numbers consist of a letter, and with the help of this letter, you can match the letter with the years listed in this article. For example, the letter ”C” in the Panerai serial number indicates that the watch was made in the year 2000.

Where can Panerai serial numbers be found?

Like on most timepieces, most Panerai serial numbers can be found on the case back of the watch. Part of the reason that the serial numbers are engraved on the case back is to make them ”hidden” from other people, thus making it more difficult for people who should not have your serial number to get access to them.

Panerai Luminor Marina 8 Days PAM590

Panerai started with serial numbers in 1997 with the serial BB970001.

Panerai case numbers normally start with ”OP’” and are then followed by 4 digits. The case number identifies the case used on the watch. Different Panerai models may share the same case and so have the same case number. Small changes in a case design over the years can see the case number change for its model. Since 1997, they have been ascending.

Panerai Serial Numbers by Year: Serial Letter Production Year

  • No letter: 1997
  • A: 1998
  • B: 1999
  • C: 2000
  • D: 2001
  • E: 2002
  • F: 2003
  • G: 2004
  • H: 2005
  • I: 2006
  • J: 2007
  • K: 2008
  • L: 2009
  • M: 2010
  • N: 2011
  • O: 2012
  • P: 2013
  • Q: 2014
  • R: 2015
  • S: 2016
  • T: 2017

Serial Number

The second number is the individual watch number that started in 1997 with BB970001, and is steadily increasing. For the year 2000, numbers of 101xxxx are not uncommon.

Production Number: Panerai serial numbers

The final letter in a Panerai serial number is the watch’s number out of the total product for the year.

For example, if a Panerai has the number ”150/1000, it indicates that your Panerai is number 150 out of a total production run of 1000 pieces.

These numbers are true for all Panerai watches, no matter the model or style. This can also be referred to as the edition number, even though these are technically part of your serial numbers.

Panerai PAM 590

Panerai Serial number changes in 2002

In the middle of the year 2002, Some Panerai watches started appearing with serial numbers PB50xxxx.

The serial number is equivalent to the identity card number. For each different watch, this number will be different.

Most Panerai serial numbers start with the letters ‘BB’ but ‘PB’ has also been used. The numbers following the letters increment with production. The newer the watch, the higher the number.

How to date my Panerai?

As mentioned, with the help of the serial number of your Panerai, you can date it and the year in which it was manufactured. To date your Panerai, look at the case back of your watch to identify the serial number, identify the first letter in this serial number, and then compare the letter with the list above. So if you are uncertain when your watch was made, this method can prove very helpful.

The serial numbers can also be helpful for deciding the provenance of the watch. These numbers started in 1997 and have been ascending since.

Please note that it is not uncommon that the year of your watch is different from the year it says on the warranty card as the watch can sit at an authorized retailer for a longer period of time before it is sold (and the warranty card is dated).

Facts about Panerai: 15 Interesting Things you Must Know!

Want to learn some interesting facts about Panerai?

Officine Panerai, most commonly referred to as just Panerai, is certainly not the largest and most famous luxury watch company in the world, but the watch brand still has a strong reputation and a perhaps even richer history.

Panerai offers a full range of watches, based on various historical models of the brand. Over the years, the brand has expanded its range to offer a bigger array of watches, including precious metals and high horology complications. The watch brand is maybe most known for its iconic case design and oversized watches. Over the years, Panerai has even released watches up to 60mm in diameter. In building the brand to what it is today, loved by many deep watch bassoonists, Panerai has greatly valued its heritage and looked back at it every time it developed a new product.

In the last decade, in particular, the volumes of Panerai timepieces distributed, and the reputation of the watch company has grown significantly.

In this article, we’re looking at the top 15 facts about Panerai.

15 facts about Panerai

1. Panerai’s initial models were toxic (and still are)

Panerai is iconically known for using large luminous indexes which are easy to read, and the history stretches back to the fact that the Panerai watches were used by the Italian navy which needed watches that were easily readable underwater. What people didn’t know at the time, however, was the luminous material used in the indexes was made with Radium, one of the most radioactive chemical elements in the world.

When this material was used for the luminous indexes of Panerai watches, no one knew how dangerous was, but today we do.

Radium was, in fact, at the time even considered healthy and a good treatment against cancer, among other illnesses. Even worse was that the luminous material used in the Panerai watches at the time was applied by hand using fine brushes. Some factory workers (most of which were female) painted their fingernails with radium, and many of the workers often licked their brushes.

The watches which were then radioactive still are today. In fact, Radium has a half-life is more than 1600 years, so it will continue to be radioactive for a long time to come. Just because the luminance doesn’t glow in the dark due to the fact that the zinc sulfide in the paint is worn out, the indexes of the watch are still radioactive.

Today, the material used for the luminous indexes of Panerai watches isn’t radioactive. Despite the fact that the old watches are still radioactive, the watches are loved by Panerai collectors due to their exclusivity and limited nature.

2. Panerai made watches for the Italian and German navy

Panerai is maybe most famous for being Italian watches, and Panerai has supplied watches to the Italian and German navies.

3. Radiomir watches were the first watches to use plexiglass

When Panerai released the Radiomir in the 1930s, plexiglass didn’t have the somewhat negative reputation plexiglass has, at least when it comes to watches. Today, many see plexiglass as cheap and something that shouldn’t be used in a luxury watch, but Panerai didn’t use plexiglass in their Radiomir watches to save money, but rather because it was a new, revolutionary material that came with a great benefit

As opposed to glass crystals in watches, plexiglass didn’t shatter or break as easily. As such, glass crystals were inappropriate for divers because the glass could break during a mission.

While plexiglasses are much less scratch-resistant, it doesn’t break as easily as glass. This is why it made much more sense to use plexiglass for the diver watches that Panerai made for the frogmen.

4. Panerai was founded in 1860

5. Panerai was founded in Florence, Italy

Unlike most luxury watch brands, Panerai wasn’t founded in Switzerland, but instead in Florence, Italy. Today, however, Panerai makes its watches in Switzerland, and this can be seen on the bottom of the dial where it now says ”Swiss made”.

6. Panerai was founded by Giovanni Panerai

Giovanni lived between 1825 and 1897.

7. Panerai uses both in-house and off-the-shelf movements

8. Panerai is owned by Richemont S.A.

Panerai is today owned by a subsidiary of Compagnie Financière Richemont S.A.

9. Panerai launched its products to the public market in 1993

Why? Check the next fact about Panerai…

10. Panerai stopped providing watches to the Marina Militare in 1970

The reason why Panerai ceased providing watches to the Marina Military and instead turned to the public market is that they weren’t cost-effective nor met the specifications and tough demands of the navy.

11. Panerai came to be positioned as a luxury watch brand

When Richmond acquired Panerai, he positioned it as a luxury watch brand and increased prices. At the same time, they also increased prices.

12. Radium was replaced by Luminor on Panerai’s watches in 1949

13. Giovanni opened his watchmaker shop in 1869

The shop was open to everyone,  situated on Ponte alle Grazie in Florence. It wasn’t just a shop though. In fact, it was also the first watchmaking school in the city of Florence

14. Panerai created the Radiomir in 1916

No, this wasn’t a new model, but rather a luminous radium-based powder that was applied to the dials, more specifically the indexes of the Panerai’s watches to improve readability in dark environments, especially underwater.

15. Panerai uses a special machine to test how their watches manage seawater

Since Panerai watches were originally used by the Italian navy, they met harsh environments and came in contact with a lot of water. Today, the watches may not be used in the same harsh environments, however, many of Panerai’s watches are still dive watches. As such, Panerai has a special machine that they use to put their watches to the test, subjecting the watches to artificial seawater and chemical reactions to see how this affects the watches.

Conclusion

While Panerai isn’t the oldest watch company in the world, nor the most famous luxury watch company in the world, these facts about Panerai show that it has an interesting past.

Which of these facts about Panerai were the most surprising and new to you?
