In 2021, Tudor released a watch that, quite frankly, took the market by storm. And it did so because it was made in a material that is very rare and uncommon in today’s watch market. That material is 925 silver.

Making a watch in silver has multiple benefits. First and foremost, it’s unique and stands out from the crowd in a world where most watches are made of stainless steel. Furthermore, silver weighs more than stainless steel and therefore feels more exclusive and luxurious on the wrist. Moreover, silver has a warmer and brighter white color than steel which gives it a more striking and luxurious appearance. At the same time, if it tarnishes, it will lose its brighter white color.

Tudor has a motto which is “born to dare”. And one of the ways that they live up to this motto is by daring to experiment with new and unique materials for their watches. They have created bronze watches and they have created ceramic watches. Tudor took things one step further with the 925 79010SG and released a watch made in 925 silver, a material that barely any watch brand uses today.

When Tudor released the 79010SG, they stated in the release video the following: “It is also very stable so that when we brush it to make it matte, its aspect is final. It won’t let you down, ever. Nope, not in a million years.”

With this statement, people assumed that Tudor had created a silver alloy that was stable enough to never tarnish or change color, which is something that silver is known to do. But since Tudor created its own silver alloy for this watch, they didn’t want to disclose the exact composition of the metal.

Of course, if you would ask most people, they would be more surprised that silver wouldn’t tarnish or oxidize. But Tudor’s statement gave some hope that perhaps Tudor had solved the issue of tarnishing, thus making 925 more suitable for wristwatches. After all, tarnishing has been one of the main reasons why watchmakers have chosen not to use this material to a great extent in the last decades.

With this said, some people actually like the aged, tarnished look of the 925 as it tarnishes. After all, bronze watches from Tudor are very popular, and a lot of people buy them for the sole reason that they enjoy the fact that it changes over time and gets a more sporty, tool-like look. But the issue some people have is Tudor’s statement about the 925.

If Tudor would have released the watch and presented it as a watch made in silver, people would naturally have immediately assumed that it would tarnish, and expected that when buying it. But instead, Tudor said it would not tarnish, eventually being proven the opposite, thus causing disappointment amongst some customers.

Perhaps we as customers just had too high hopes for the 925 Black Bay. Even if Tudor created a new silver alloy, 92.5% of the metal is still silver and with that in mind, it is to be expected that it is going to show at least some levels of oxidization. However, we can still say that Tudor has succeeded with its alloy in a sense. Even if it doesn’t eliminate tarnishing completely, Tudor has succeeded in dramatically reducing the level of tarnishing with its new alloy.

Whilst regular 925 silver will show black oxidization on the surface, the vast majority of Tudor owners will not experience more than a bit of yellow hue to the surface.

One person expressed their thoughts about the watch in the following way:

“I originally loved the sound of a silver watch and read the Tudor saying that ‘it would not tarnish’ and seeing the tarnish of your watch, I would be incredibly disappointed in a tarnished watch that is far different than the original bright white silver color. Unfortunately, the tarnish on your watch will impact your ability to sell that watch and has severely devalued the watch. Knowing from your unfortunate experience, I would not buy a Tudor 925 and invest my money elsewhere. Perhaps you have a recourse with Tudor.”

On the contrary, another person said:

“I personally love the tarnish look of the case and can understand that it isn’t for everyone. But I agree with you that the warm tarnish doesn’t really go well with the cool gray dial with bright white indices.”

This just goes to show how the question of Tudor Black Bay 925 silver tarnishing splits opinions.

As mentioned, the tarnishing is something that splits opinions and may have caused the initial hype and popularity of this model to decrease slightly since its release to some people. Whilst some people like it, others don’t like the look, or like the idea that the luxury watch they buy will eventually start to oxidize.

Tudor silver 925 silver tarnishing

Only a few weeks or months after the 925 silver was released, reports about the fact that owners’ 925 silver Black Bays had started to tarnish appeared.

The tarnishing was shown in the form of a yellow hue to the finish of the case, in particular on the backside of the lugs, an area where the constant contact with the wrist, humidity, and sweat causes faster oxidation. If the Tudor 925 would in fact prove to oxidize, it would be this area that would start oxidizing first. And that’s exactly what happened.

The YouTube channel Checkitoutvideos said the following:

“won’t let you down in a million years” they are right you know, cause it only took 1 month to tarnish.

It doesn’t come as a surprise that people in warmer and more humid climates experience faster tarnishing of their watch than those who live in colder and dry climates. Naturally, when people sweat more, it causes faster tarnishing than in dry climates where the watch isn’t subjected as much to oxidizing substances such as sweat.

How to remove and clean Tudor 925 silver tarnishing

The good news is that just as you can remove tarnishing on silverware and other silver objects, you’ll of course be able to remove the tarnishing from your Black Bay 925 silver. The same has also proven to be the case for the Black Bay Bronze.

Fortunately, the process of cleaning the watch is both simple and quick. With this in mind, if you really like the Tudor 925 and are turned off by the idea that it tarnishes, we would still say buy it! After all, you can relatively easily, as seen in the video above, clean and remove the tarnishing. But don’t buy it and expect it not to tarnish. Because most likely, it will, at least to some degree.

Preface About Tudor As A Brand 

Tudor was originally founded in 1926 by the same man who founded Rolex, Hans Wilsdorf. His ambition was to make quality watches, that felt like a Rolex, but with a smaller price tag. In the 60s and all the way to the early era of the 2000s, Tudor manufactured a Submariner that looked very much like a Rolex Submariner.

These were not only affordable but also sought after, especially by the Italian and French markets. Unfortunately, the fame and glory days of Tudor also stops in this era as they started to walk away more and more from Rolex to become an independent brand, not relying on its bigger brother. In this era, own designs were tested and manufactured, but unfortunately, no model from this era left a big impact on the match market. In 2012, Tudor finally came up with a new model line,

The Tudor Heritage Black Bay Fifty-Eight reference 79030N was released at Basel world in 2018 and was perhaps the most talked-about watch during the convention. The Black Bay Fifty-Eight truly was a nod to the past, with smaller dimensions and a case measuring 39mm, which alone reminded a lot of the 6-digit Rolex/Tudor Submariners from the 80s to late 2000s era. The bracelet featured rivets, the dial had a vintage-inspired patina and was matte black, the bezel was in aluminum, and vintage elements such as a red triangle on the insert could be found. 

The Black Bay Fifty-Eight is the perfect all-around watch for your everyday lifestyle, with its slimmer proportions, but also makes up for the perfect sports watch ready for any adventure. The watch is water-resistant to 20 BAR/ 200M / 660FT with a screw-down crown. 

If you are not a fan of vintage-inspired patina on the dial, directly from the factory, the Fifty-Eight is also available with a blue dial and bezel insert, which features an all-white print on the dial. 

Tudor 79830RB 

The Tudor Heritage Black Bay GMT, reference 79830RB, was presented at the same Basel convention as the Tudor Fifty-Eight. The Tudor GMT featured an aluminum bezel with a blue and red configuration, commonly nicknamed “Pepsi”, The case measures 41mm, and compared to the Fifty-Eight, it is a much larger case, which also is a lot thicker than the Fifty-Eight. 

The release of the GMT in 2018 came as a surprise to many, as Rolex the same day launched their first modern GMT Master II in stainless steel with a Cerachrome “Pepsi” bezel. To many, the Tudor GMT was the perfect watch, at an affordable price range, which was quite easy to acquire from an Authorized Tudor Retailed, or on the second-hand market. 

The GMT is water-resistant to 20 BAR/ 200M / 660FT, with a screw-down crown. What quickly got around about the new GMT was however a date issue. New GMT owners could discover that the date on the GMT model jumped half a day, or 1,5 days, which made the date window display 2 dates, instead of 1 correct. Tudor 79210CNU 

The Tudor Black Bay 41 Ceramic was a big achievement for Tudor on its release in 2021. It is the first-ever all-ceramic Tudor ever made. The movement is also the first-ever Tudor to be METAS certified, and the first Tudor movement to be resistant to 15.000 gausses. What perhaps is most interesting about this model launch, is that it follows the exact same specifications as an Omega watch which was presented a year earlier, but at a price tag that is almost double the Tudor. 

It is clear, that Tudor competes with Omega and so far, at least in technical fields, offers equivalent watches, at a much more affordable price, but without compromising on quality. 

Tudor 79010SG 

Presented in 2021, the Tudor Black Bay Heritage Fifty-Eight in 925 sterling Silver was added to the Black Bay Family. 
Silver as a material is quite hard to work with, as silver naturally tarnishes. In the launch video of the Fifty-Eight Silver, Tudor claimed that the patented mix of silver, would not tarnish in a million years. Despite this, it is known that the Fifty-Eight silver over time can develop tarnished areas, which we have covered in an article here. 

Presenting a watch in silver is also a very modest move from Tudor, as it commonly not is used as a material in the watch industry. The model for the first time was equipped with an open case-back, which displayed the re-worked in-house movement MT5400 with a decorative rotor and visual movement parts. 

The taupe-colored dial and bezel lean more towards the grey color scheme, and the model is available both on a leather strap or a fabric strap from Tudor in a matching color. 

Tudor 28600 

The Tudor 28600 is the first modern Day-Date from Tudor, which is accessible on the global market. Previous to the launch in 2020, a Tudor with a day and date configuration was only available for the Asian market, reference 76200, which featured a vintage-inspired bracelet and case in 36mm. 

The new Day-Date from Tudor is 41mm and features an integrated bracelet, and the model design does definitely have DNA from the Rolex Oysterquartz. The model is available in different dial configurations, but also in a different case and bracelet materials such as steel and gold. 

The Tudor Day-Date reference 28600 is without a doubt one of the most affordable entry-level swiss watches and with Tudor as a brand behind the watch, the affordable list price is definitely a no-brainer if you are in the market for a Day-Date. 

Conclusion 

It is clear that Tudor is an impressive and modest brand, which does not continue to produce watches in an old-fashioned way, but instead challenges the watch industry with modest choices of materials such as ceramic and silver, which also comes at an affordable price tag whilst comparing against competitors such as Omega.

It is also clear, that Tudor definitely has found a successful style of the case which is appreciated, and created models around it, namely the Heritage Black Bay collection. Despite this, models such as the Day-Date have proven to be an appreciated style, and it’s safe to say that we can expect Tudor to make new launches, based on the design element.

As of now, Tudor offers the Black Bay Fifty-Eight to be bought on either a NATO strap, leather strap with a steel folding clasp, or a riveted stainless steel bracelet. All three straps are of high quality, and the choice can easily become difficult. Let us discuss which bracelet configuration you should go for!

Riveted Stainless Steel Bracelet

In many eyes, the all-time classic bracelet for a divers watch is, of course, the stainless steel bracelet. The bracelet is made out of 316L steel with a polished and satin finish on the riveted bracelet. As the Tudor 79030N really does remind us of the true heritage of diving watches Tudor once made, they chose to have the bracelet riveted which is a modern re-issue of older types of steel bracelets, typically from the 1950s and 60s that both Tudor and Rolex used for their watches.

The bracelet has reference number 72040 and is made in solid steel and you really do get the heavy, solid, and well-built impression of it. The lug width of the Black Bay Fifty-Eight measures 20mm and is 2mm smaller compared to Tudor’s Black Bay Heritage 41mm Divers watch reference 79230N which is in production as of today.  The 2mm difference is not only what makes the bracelet so comfortable as the bracelet slims down to 16mm where it is attached to the clasp.

This bracelet really does remind us of a heritage divers watch from the 60s, and as Tudor, themselves say: “The Black Bay Fifty-Eight is designed for slim wrists and vintage enthusiasts alike.”.

If you are buying the Black Bay Fifty-Eight on the steel bracelet, you might have heard that Divers-watches usually have a diving extension that can be used when a diver put the watch over his swimming suit, well, Tudor has not equipped any of its’ bracelet with a diving extension that is in production today.

This is worth taking into consideration if you are planning to actually dive with your watch as you won’t easily be able to adjust the length of the bracelet without any tools.
Overall, the stainless steel bracelet really gives a positive feeling. It feels solid and well-built, the riveted bracelet really gives you that vintage look and the bracelet is finely brushed which gives it a rugged and sporty appearance.

Leather Strap With A Folding Clasp

You can also choose to get your Black Bay Fifty-Eight on a leather strap that features a foldable stainless steel clasp giving you a less sporty, but instead, a more dressed-up feeling. In some opinions, leather straps should be forbidden on divers watches, as it really comes down to that it’s not practical at all. If you were to swim or dive with your leather strap, after a few times of getting the strap wet and then drying it, it will start to smell in a not-so-pleasant way.

The same will happen if you are wearing the watch a lot during summer and sweat repeatedly. Even though there already are strong opinions about the strap, we must admit that it actually suits the watch just fine. Tudor’s folding clasp feels solid and is easy to adjust on the leather strap. If you are into leather when it comes to watches, we wouldn’t see a reason why not to recommend this combo.

However, even though you probably will wash your leather strap after sweating or diving in salt water, you should be aware that after some time, just like any other leather product, you should take care of the leather. It may also be necessary to replace the leather strap with a new one from Tudor.

This leather strap is just made out of leather with no rubber underneath touching the skin unlike the leather strap made for the Tudor Black Bay P01. Perhaps Tudor decides to upgrade the leather strap or at least give you this option for the Black Bay Fifty-Eight.

NATO Strap

The third and final option Tudor gives you to go with this watch is a traditional NATO strap. In manufacturing the fabric straps, Tudor has partnered with a company that perpetuates an over-century-old artistic craft.

What is especially interesting about this is that the company that makes the Tudor fabric straps is also the company that manufactured parachutes for the French navy. A divers watch really does get that rough look and feel when you have it on a NATO strap. But should you really get the watch originally on a NATO strap? We think not.

As the difference in price only is a couple of hundred euros, we strongly suggest that you get the watch on a steel bracelet and then later add the NATO strap which can be bought here. If you were to buy it on the NATO strap directly and wish to add the stainless steel bracelet or the leather strap with a stainless steel fold clasp, you are looking to spend a whole lot more.

The NATO strap is also a safer option if you are going to expose your watch for a lot of training. The NATO strap was originally made for the army, and once a soldier filled in a G10 poll they were given a NATO strap for their watch.

The idea of the NATO strap is to have the watch secured by two spring bars which means that unlike the leather or steel bracelet version if you were to break or drop one of your spring bars, the watch will still not be dropped as it is secured with another spring bar on the opposite side of the case.

Conclusion

All strap variations from Tudor are great in their own way. In the end, it all comes down to what you prefer. In our opinion, the wisest choice will always be to get the watch on the stainless steel strap first, then compliment it with either the NATO or Leather afterward.

Stainless steel will always feel sporty and more exclusive, the Leather strap can give it a more luxurious and elegant style while the NATO strap really makes it a field watch made to use for all sorts of activities.

March is an exciting time for Tudor enthusiasts each year. This is the time when Tudor officially presents new models for the year. And finally, the time has come for Tudor to unveil the new models for 2022. And they have done so at Watches & Wonders in Genèva,

Every year, Tudor releases a selection of new models, discontinues certain old models, and introduces new versions of already existing ones.

Let’s look closer at the most significant Tudor watch releases for 2022.

New Tudor watches 2022

Tudor Black Bay Pro 79470

The Tudor Black Bay Pro is perhaps the most significant release from Tudor for 2022. After all, it’s technically a completely new model, even though it is still a part of the Black Bay family. The Black Bay Pro 79470 is a 39mm GMT watch with a GMT function. Designed as a true adventurer’s watch. It has a 39mm stainless steel case and is presented on Tudor’s T-fit adjustable bracelet. It has a fixed 24-hour stainless steel bezel and a yellow snowflake GMT hand.

Tudor Black Bay GMT “Root beer” 79833MN

When the first Tudor Black Bay GMT reference 79830RB was released at Baselworld 2018, it instantly became a huge success. With this in mind, it was only a matter of time before Tudor would decide to continue to build upon this success. A lot of people had lots to wish for new variants. New colors, a smaller case, and reduced thickness. Throughout the production of the 79830RB, Tudor met some issues with the GMT, where the well-known date wheel issue would haunt the movement. The result was that Tudor received a lot of complaints and service errands where customers brought their watches for repair to have the date wheel issue resolved. There have also been reports that in some cases, Tudor would replace the faulty movement with a new one altogether.

Perhaps this was the reason why it would take 4 years before Tudor finally thought it was time to introduce a new GMT to the family. Perhaps they want to reassure themselves that they had perfected the GMT movement and the issues revolving around it before they started to build on the collection for real. 

With that said, the release of a new Black Bay GMT doesn’t come as a surprise, but any Tudor enthusiast will be very happy about the news that finally, the time has come.  But the fact that Tudor chose to release it in gold and steel under the reference 79822MN. This watch is the same as the 79830RB but it has been upgraded with a two-tone yellow gold configuration and a brown and black bezel insert, reminiscent of Rolex’s iconic “Root Beer” GMT.

Tudor Black Bay Chrono S&G 79363N

Over the last couple of years, Tudor has introduced numerous gold and steel watches into their collection, starting with the Black Bay 79733 back in 2017. Introducing more gold and steel watches is a natural step for Tudor in order to increase the exclusivity of the brand, bring up the overall price point for its watches, and move the brand more towards luxury. In 2021, for example, Tudor released – for the first time ever, a full gold watch, the Black Bay 58 79018V.

In 2021, Tudor also updated its Black Bay Chronograph by replacing the 79350 and replacing it with the 79360. The new model became a huge success and, apart from having a really appealing design, it solved one of the biggest criticisms of the Chrono since it was released – its thickness. But whilst Tudor released the 79360N in full stainless steel, they never made any changes to the gold and steel version, reference 79363N that was released in 2019.

With that said, it still retained one of the key criticism of the Black Bay Chrono, which is its thickness. But now, for 2022, Tudor has also applied what they took into consideration for last year’s Chrono models and presented a slimmer and more refined Black Bay Chrono in gold and steel. Replacing the previous 79363N with a solid bezel, it has been upgraded with an aluminium bezel, as can be found on the 79360N in stainless steel. The watch receives a vibrant and new champagne dial with black sub-seconds.

Tudor Black Bay 31, 36, 39-and 41 S&G in steel & Gold

At Baselworld 2019, Tudor presented the Black Bay in gold & steel for the first time ever.

Specifically, they presented Three different sizes with two dial color options (black or gold) with Jubilee-style bracelets.

For 2022, they are updating and building on this collection by introducing the whole lineup of sizes, from 31mm to 41mm. Perhaps most notably is that this watch is, for the first time ever, made in 41mm. This is definitely something that will be appreciated by men with larger wrists who cannot wear a 36mm because it is too small.

This model line has been upgraded with a large selection of sizes, dials, and bezels.  The most important change is the upgrade of the movement to the whole line as well as a new“T-fit” folding clasp and safety catch, allowing the wearer to adjust the size of the bracelet without any tools.

Tudor Royal

The Tudor Royal was first presented in 2020 and was met with great praise. Unlike many of Tudor’s other watches, it was not based on the Black Bay family which, in our eyes was a good move. The introduction of the Tudor Royal allowed Tudor to establish a greater variety of models and not become known as a “one watch brand”, like Audemars Piguet with the Royal Oak. The Royal has a distinct, retro-inspired integrated bracelet design that is recognizable from a mile away. At least amongst Tudor enthusiasts. When Tudor first released the Royal, they released it in a selection of different sizes as well as a wide array of dial options.

But in 2022, Tudor continues to build upon its popular Royal collection and expands it further. They did so by introducing two new ladies’ watches with mother of pearl dials, diamonds, and a diamond bezel.

Finally! The time has come for Tudor to announce perhaps the most anticipated watch since the brand launched its 39mm dive watch Heritage Black Bay Fifty-Eight reference 79030N in 2018. Since this launch, people have anticipated more variations of the now-loved and appreciated 39mm configuration, and Tudor has listened to our prayers and presents on July 1st, 2020 at 7 am CEST the Tudor Heritage Black Bay Fifty-Eight 79030B – a blue dial and bezel version of the 79030N.

Background to the Tudor Heritage Black Bay Fifty-Eight 79030B

To understand where the 79030B is coming from, we need to look at the first iteration.

In 2012, Tudor released its immensely successful Heritage Black Bay reference 79220. In terms of design, this was a huge success as it sought inspiration from vintage Tudor dive watches, which have design features that collectors and enthusiasts have come to love. But there was one main complaint about this watch which was that it was too big. Unlike the watches it took inspiration from, it did not have a vintage size at 41mm. Tudor presented the 79220 in three colors – black, blue, and red, to cater to all tastes and preferences, as seen below:

And so in 2018, Tudor proved it had listened to the opinions of the crowds and released a 39mm version of the Heritage Black Bay named Black Bay Fifty-Eight reference 79030N.

The catch? Unlike the 79220 and the successor, the reference 79230 (featuring an in-house movement), it was only available in one color – black.

The 79030N proved to be a huge success, received great critique, and became difficult to find at authorized retailers – even having year-long waiting lists in some places.

But there was still something missing, and that was more color options. Because the 79230 had a lineup of three colors, it didn’t take long until people started speculating if Tudor would go the same route with the Fifty-Eight and present it in more colors. After all, there was no reason for Tudor not to, considering the huge popularity of the Fifty-Eight 79030N.

INTRODUCING: Tudor Heritage Black Bay 79030B

Finally, it was time for Tudor to release a much-anticipated release. The time has come to release the first variant of the Tudor Heritage Black Bay Fifty-Eight reference 79030B.

Prior to Baselworld 2020, a blue version of the Fifty-Eight was one of the main predictions people had that Tudor would release. Then Baselworld was announced canceled and Tudor left us hanging with their releases. But now, finally, on the 1st of July 2020, Tudor has released the blue Fifty-Eight.

At its core, this is not a new watch. It is identical to the standard black Fifty-Eight, but the main difference is of course its colorway. For a full in-depth review of the 79030N, you can read our review here. The Tudor 79030B is simply a 79030N with a new set of shoes. But what a difference it makes!

The Tudor Heritage Black Bay 79030B has the 39mm stainless steel case that we have come to love. This case stays true to vintage Tudor dive watches (specifically one released in 1958, hence its name), not only in terms of design but also in size. The “B” in the reference number stands for “Blue”, or “bleu” in French, which reveals this is a blue version.

The main attraction of this watch is its new blue aluminum bezel and blue dial. Rather than a black bezel, it has a blue one. For a vintage look, it remains matte. The dial has also been remade from black to blue. Also, the dial does not have as rich texture as the 79030N. It’s still good to see that Tudor has chosen not to have a fully polished dial in order to keep the vintage appeal.

Gone with the gilt

Another complaint about the Fifty-Eight that some people had was its gilt-colored printing, slightly browned luminous mass (faux patina), and gilt-plated metal surroundings on the applied markers. Whilst many people love this look as it gives the watch warmth, some people simply prefer a watch without gilt accents and prefer something cleaner and fresher. And with the release of the 79030B, Tudor showed it had listened to this as well.

The Tudor 79030B has swapped the gilt dial printing for white printing instead. It has also swapped the hour markers and printing on the bezel for a cleaner silver printing as well. The hour markers are no longer gilt but instead made in a highly polished white metal. Is the 79030B the watch that answers all our prayers?
