Heuer Carrera CS3111 – The Best Re-Issue Ever Made?

When it comes to re-issue models in the watch industry, the opinions seem to be rather split. A re-issue whose purpose and idea is to commemorate a special model made, often connected with a special anniversary, is however often a popular choice when exploring older vintage models for many reasons, two main reasons are the build quality, which over the years has gotten significantly better for most Swiss well-established manufacturers, and secondly the price which tends to be more affordable compared to the original design and model. However, when it comes to watches issued as a re-edition one definitely stands out from the crowd – the Heuer Carrera CS3111, manufactured in the late 90s’ to commemorate the special Heuer Carrera from 1964. In this article, we’ll take a deeper dive into why the Heuer Carrera CS3111 perhaps might be the best re-issue ever made – along with the watch’s specifications in detail.

First of all, let’s go over the specifications for the Heuer Carrera CS3111:

What is a Re-issue watch?

Just as the name suggests, a re-issue watch, or as Heuer describes it: “Re-edition”, is a second issue of a model often a number of years later. Taking a look at leading Swiss watch manufacturers it appears to be a re-occurring theme and strategy from time to time, and honestly, it is not hard to understand why.

When it comes to watches more or less every major model from any company such as the Patek Philippe Nautilus, Rolex Submariner, Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, Omega Speedmaster, or in this case the Heuer Carrera was models first developed in the ’60s and ’70s. These watches were the first interpretation from each brand of how the model should look like, and can thus be described as the original design and model, for what later would become highly popular models.

However, using the word re-issue indicates that the watch more or less is the same as the original, but perhaps with a few tweaks and improvements to make it stand out just a bit from the original model. Iconic models which were mentioned above such as the Rolex Submariner, Patek Philippe Nautilus, or Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, do not however have re-issue models carried out afterward. There could be many reasons why this is the case, but instead, if we take a deeper look at Rolex as a brand, we know that they are a brand that puts evolution rather than revolution first into consideration. The Submariner for example, just like the Royal Oak or Nautilus, looks more or less the same as the original design but has gone through an evolution over the 60 years course.
With this said, the Submariner has over the years been improved slowly and constantly is an ongoing evolution, which makes it a watch that not is a re-issue, nor has Rolex ever made a re-issue.

Typically, a re-issue is presented on a design or model that is brought back after several years of disappearance in the manufacturing process. There have however been several re-issued made in recent times by bigger Swiss watch brands such as Omega, Breitling, and of course Tag Heuer.

Heuer Carrera CS3111 – True To the Original

As mentioned above, it is popular to make some small tweaks on a re-issue to make it stand out from the original design just a tiny bit. However, what many manufacturers do is change the design significantly, but justify the model as a re-issue by keeping important elements of the original watch, which could be the case design, dial colors, or small markings and details.

Exploring the Heuer Carrera CS3111 however, there are very few designer changes from the original watch presented in 1964. Examinating the watch in detail reveals a number of things, which makes it an exceptional well-made re-issue that truly commemorates important elements of the original design and the time epoch in the ’60s.

Plexiglass Crystal

One of the most obvious and important vintage elements of the watch is of course the domed plexiglass crystal. Back in the early 60s, very few watches were equipped with a crystal made from anything else than plexiglass. What recognizes plexiglass is its soft characteristics, which also is one reason why sapphire crystal later replaced it. Soft plexiglass is not scratch resistant at all, meaning that small hairlines will occur on the plexiglass just after normal usage, which to some is disturbing, and to others doesn’t bother at all. Plexiglass, because it is that soft, namely can be polished by anyone using everyday-use products at home such as toothpaste.

Another reason why plexiglass was replaced by sapphire crystals in the watch industry, is because plexiglass can dry out, which can create cracks in the crystal. Cracks in the crystal may look rough and tough visually, but creates an issue when it comes to water resistance.

Tritium Light Mass

Another true and important element of the watch is the light mass which is used: Tritium. In the mid 50’s Radium was replaced by Tritium as a much safer and less dangerous light mass. Tritium was then used as the main light mass for every watch manufacturer up until 1998 when it was replaced by luminova.

Tritium has a half-life of 12,3 years, which means that its’ efficiency decreases by half every 12,3 years. This is what causes tritium dials to age into unique brown, orange, yellow, vanilla, or sometimes grey dials. As the Heuer Carrera CS3111 was manufactured in the late 90s, it is not unlikely that models manufactured in 1998 or later, instead used luminova as a safety precaution, as tritium still is lightly radioactive, meaning it’s not completely risk-free to use, even though the health risks are slim to none. But changing to luminova in 1998 would also mean that the purpose of the luminova (to glow in the dark), wouldn’t be an issue at all 100 years down the line.

That’s why it’s fun and interesting to see the Carrera re-issue with a tritium dial and hands, which is indicated on the dial at the 6 o’clock hour-register as a “T2 written over “Swiss”.

35,5mm Case

The case of the Heuer Carrera CS3111 is for the time period (the late 90s) relatively small and outdated. During the late 90s and early 00s, larger watch cases were starting to get introduced as the new standard in the watch industry. By Today’s standards, in 2023, a case size of 35,5 would be categorized as a woman’s watch, and in the late 90s, it would most likely be viewed as a unisex/men’s watch, and in the 60s exclusively a men’s watch.

That’s one of the better reasons why the Carrera might be the perfect re-issue, as the smaller case size might not have been the most modest choice in the late 90s when it was manufactured. The case size is a typical example where manufacturers that create a re-issue tend to bend the rules and make the case slightly or significantly bigger, in order to meet the stands of today, yet Heuer decided to stay true to the design and honor the 35,5mm perfect case size.

Another interesting detail about the re-issue is the fact that Heuer decided not to hide the fact that the watch was made as a re-issue. By looking at the case-back of the watch, we can see that the text “1964 Heuer Carrera Re-Edition” is engraved.

Naturally with a smaller case comes a smaller lug width, which on the Heuer CS3111 measures 18mm.

Crown & Pushers

The crown and pushers are also a perfect example of a vintage feeling given by wearing the watch. The crown, nor the pushers, are screw-in meaning that you can start and stop the chronograph by pushing directly, unlike the famously known Daytona (for example the reference 116500) where you would have to unscrew the pushers first, and then start/stop the chronograph.

However, using non-screw-in crown and pushers creates a dilemma where watches that use this construction, tends to offer a less protective water resistant case.

Heuer – Not Tag Heuer

Although the Tag Group purchased the majority of the Heuer shares in 1985, what then became “Tag Heuer” decided to stick with Heuer printed on the dial solely, and not Tag Heuer – a definite nod to the past.

Omega Speedmaster Apollo 8 Caseback 1869 caliber

Lemania Cal. 1873

The watch is powered by the immaculate Lemania caliber 1873, perhaps better known as the original movement, modified by Omega for a number of Speedmaster such as the following:

  • Caliber 1861 (Used in Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch 311.30.42.30.01.005)
  • Caliber 1869 (Used in the Speedmaster Dark Side of The Moon 311.92.44.30.01.001, as seen above)
  • Caliber 3861 (Used in the Latest Moonwatch, But also the Apollo XI 50th Anniversary)
  • Caliber 861

It’s interesting to see that Heuer left the movement completely to Lemania, without modifying it, unlike Omega which has used the Lemania Caliber 1873 as a base caliber for almost its entire Chronograph collection, such as hundreds of Speedmaster, both older models and new ones still sold by Omega today.

As mentioned, this is a feature that makes the Heuer Carrera CS3111 perhaps the ultimate re-issued watch ever, as the design, proportions, and materials are more or less just like the original, but instead has been equipped with arguably the best, most function-tested chronograph movement to add extra reliability.

Different Caseback Variations

The Heuer Carrera can be seen with two different caseback variations, which makes it in theory possible to divide the watch in a MK1 and MK2 configuration. The earliest examples of the Heuer 1964 Carrera Re-edition can be seen with the text “1964 Heuer Carrera Re-Edition” engraved on the case back, with a font and finish that looks to be hand-engraved, whilst the later production caseback does not feature the engraving.

To some, the engraved, meaning the earliest examples of the re-edition, can be a fun feature that not only is rarer but also more true to the model name, whilst others might prefer the “cleaner” look on the caseback with no engraving.

Heuer Carrera 1964 Re-Edition Different Dials

During the same production time as the black-dialed Heuer Carrera reference 3111, a silver and pink dial was available too. The models do not differ anything from each other except the fact that the three have different dials.

Reference 3110 – Silver Dial
Reference 3111 – Black Dial
Reference 3112 – Pink “Salmon” Dial

However, if stainless steel isn’t your cup of tea, Heuer also manufactured a solid 18k gold version, which had a silver dial, and the reference number 3140

Heuer Carrera CS3111 – In Conclusion

By today’s standards, it is safe to say that the Heuer CS3111 is a successful interpretation of the original 1964 Carrera. With a modest case of 35,5mm, it is definitely the perfect watch for the vintage enthusiast. With classical elements that are true to the original 60s design and epoch, such as tritium dial and hands, plexiglass, non-screw-in pushers and crown, it is definitely a perfect choice for those seeking the ultimate vintage-inspired watch, but with a modern robust movement and build quality. If you are into a smaller vintage-inspired chronograph, with a classic black dial, plexiglass, and leather strap – then the Heuer Carrera reference CS3111 definitely is the watch to check out!

We’ll go into detail further on as well as discuss all of the other important considerations to make but let’s begin with the basics:

Accuracy is an essential feature for an engineer’s watch, as timekeeping is critical in the engineering profession. A watch with a precise quartz or automatic movement is a good choice for an engineer who requires accuracy and consistency in timekeeping.

Durability is another crucial feature of an engineer’s watch, as they may work in harsh environments that can damage a fragile watch. A watch with a rugged design and scratch-resistant materials is ideal for engineers who work in construction sites or industrial settings.

Water resistance is also important for an engineer’s watch, especially for those who work outdoors or near water. A watch with a high water-resistance rating, such as 100 meters or more, is ideal for an engineer who may encounter wet conditions.

Shock resistance is a must-have feature for an engineer’s watch, as they may work with heavy machinery or equipment that can cause a watch to be bumped or jostled. A watch with shock-resistant features, such as reinforced casing or particularly durable case designs can prevent damage from impacts.

Legibility is another important feature of an engineer’s watch, as they may need to read the time in low-light conditions. A watch with a high-contrast, easy-to-read dial, and luminous hands and markers is essential for an engineer who may work in dimly lit environments. For quartz watches, a backlit screen is particularly useful.

Luminosity is also an essential feature for an engineer’s watch, as they may need to read the time in complete darkness. A watch with luminous hands and markers, and a backlit display, is ideal for engineers who work in dark environments.

Additional features, such as a stopwatch, countdown timer, and world time, can be useful for an engineer who needs to track multiple time zones or perform time-sensitive tasks.

Overall, the best watch for an engineer should have a combination of these features, with an emphasis on accuracy, durability, and legibility. A watch with these features can help an engineer stay on schedule, perform their job more efficiently, and withstand the rigors of their work environment.

Factors to Consider when Choosing a Watch for Engineers

When considering buying a watch, it’s important to think about the purpose of the watch. Different types of engineers have different needs and requirements, and the watch should be chosen according to the specific needs of the engineer.

For example, a civil engineer who works on construction sites may need a watch that is durable and can withstand rough handling. They may also need a watch with a compass and altimeter, which can be useful when navigating through unfamiliar terrain. Similarly, an electrical engineer may need a watch with a timer and stopwatch to help them keep track of experiments and testing.

A mechanical engineer, on the other hand, may require a watch with a tachymeter or chronograph, which can be used to measure speed and distance. A chemical engineer, on the other hand, may require a watch with a countdown timer, which can be used to time chemical reactions.

When considering the purpose of the watch, it’s important to think about the specific tasks and activities that the engineer will be engaged in, as well as any unique features that may be required. This can help to narrow down the options and ensure that the chosen watch meets the engineer’s specific needs.

Accuracy

A watch that keeps accurate time is essential for engineers who need to be punctual and keep track of precise measurements. Watches with quartz movements tend to be more accurate than those with mechanical movements, although automatic and manual movements can also be highly accurate with proper maintenance.

Durability

Engineers are often required to work in harsh environments where their watch may be subjected to impacts, water, dust, and extreme temperatures. Thus, a watch that is durable and can withstand such conditions is necessary. A watch made of materials such as stainless steel, titanium, or carbon fiber can offer the required toughness and durability.

Water resistance

Engineers may work in damp environments, and their watch may be exposed to water or other liquids. A water-resistant watch can withstand such conditions and continue to function without damage. A watch with a water-resistant rating of at least 100 meters is recommended for engineers.

Legibility

A watch with a clear, easy-to-read display is important for engineers who need to quickly check the time or other information without having to squint or strain their eyes.  A watch with a large dial and clear markers can make it easy to read the time, even in low-light conditions. High-contrast display and large, bold numbers is ideal.

Luminosity

A watch with luminous markers and hands can be highly useful for engineers who work in low-light or dark environments. A watch with strong luminosity, backlight or illumination can be beneficial. A watch with a built-in light can make it easier to read the time in dark environments, allowing engineers to work more efficiently and accurately.

Purpose

The purpose of the watch is the first factor to consider when choosing a watch for an engineer. Different types of engineers have different requirements, and the watch should be chosen according to the specific needs of the engineer. For example, a civil engineer may need a watch with a compass and altimeter, while a mechanical engineer may require a watch with a tachymeter or chronograph.

Price range

Price is an important factor to consider when buying a watch, as it can vary widely depending on the brand, features, and materials used. When choosing a watch as an engineer, it’s important to consider the specific needs and budget of the wearer.

Some high-end luxury watches can cost thousands of dollars, while more affordable options can be found for a few hundred dollars or less. While a more expensive watch may offer additional features and higher quality materials, it may not always be necessary or practical for an engineer’s needs.

When choosing a watch, it’s important to consider the specific needs of the wearer and their budget. High-quality watches from reputable brands can often be found at a range of price points, and it’s important to look for a watch that offers the features and functionality that the wearer needs, without breaking the bank.

It’s also important to consider the long-term value of the watch when making a purchase. A higher-quality watch may provide better accuracy, durability, and reliability over time, making it a better value in the long run, even if it has a higher upfront cost.

Movement Type

Another important factor to consider when buying a watch is the type of movement that the watch uses. There are three main types of watch movements: quartz, mechanical, and automatic.

  • Quartz movements: Quartz watches are powered by batteries and use a quartz crystal to keep time. They are known for their accuracy, as they typically gain or lose only a few seconds per month. Quartz watches are also relatively low-maintenance and require minimal upkeep.
  • Mechanical (manual-wind) movements: Mechanical watches are powered by a mainspring and require regular winding to keep time. They are known for their craftsmanship and precision, and many watch enthusiasts prefer them for their classic style and unique features.
  • Automatic movements: Automatic watches are similar to mechanical watches, but they use a rotor to wind the mainspring automatically as the wearer moves their wrist. They are often preferred by those who want the precision of a mechanical watch without the need for regular winding.

When choosing a watch, it’s important to consider the specific needs and preferences of the wearer. Quartz watches are often the most accurate and low-maintenance option, making them a good choice for engineers who want a reliable watch that requires minimal upkeep. Mechanical and automatic watches are often preferred by those who appreciate the craftsmanship and unique features of these types of watches, but they require more maintenance and may not be as accurate as quartz watches.

Multiple Time Zones: Engineers often work with clients or teams in different time zones, and a watch with multiple time zones can help them keep track of the time in different regions. A watch with multiple time zones can also be useful for engineers who travel frequently.

Alarm Function: An alarm function can be useful for engineers who need to stay on schedule and keep track of their time. A watch with an alarm function can help engineers stay on task and meet their deadlines.

Chronograph: A chronograph is a watch function that can be used as a stopwatch and is often used by engineers for measuring elapsed time. A watch with a chronograph function can enhance an engineer’s productivity by enabling them to quickly and easily measure time intervals during their work.

Design and style

Design and style are also important factors to consider when choosing a watch for an engineer. Some engineers may prefer a more rugged, utilitarian design, while others may prefer a more sophisticated and stylish watch. It’s important to choose a watch that matches the engineer’s personal style and preferences.

Brand and Quality

When buying a watch, the brand and quality of the watch are important factors to consider. High-quality watches tend to be more accurate, durable, and reliable, and can provide better value for the money in the long run.

Some brands have a reputation for producing high-quality, durable watches that are ideal for the engineering profession, while others may not have the same level of quality or durability. It’s important to research the brand’s reputation and read reviews from other engineers before making a purchase.

Some of the top brands of watches for engineers include:

  • Casio: Casio is known for producing high-quality, durable watches that are well-suited for engineers and other professionals. Their G-Shock line is particularly popular for its toughness and shock resistance.

  • Timex: Timex is a popular brand that produces a wide range of affordable, high-quality watches that are suitable for engineers and other professionals. Their Ironman line is particularly well-suited for active professionals who need a watch with advanced features.
  • Citizen: Citizen is a well-known brand that produces high-quality watches with advanced features, including eco-drive technology, which converts light into energy to power the watch.

When choosing a watch, it’s important to choose a reputable brand with a good track record of producing high-quality watches. High-quality watches tend to be more durable and reliable and can provide better value for the money over time.

It’s also important to consider the warranty and customer support offered by the watch brand. A good warranty can provide added protection and peace of mind, while good customer support can be helpful if any issues arise with the watch.

Personal preferences

Personal preferences are the final factor to consider when choosing a watch for an engineer.

While the functional features of a watch are important to consider, personal style and preferences are also important to keep in mind when choosing a watch. A watch that fits the wearer’s personal style and preferences can be a great addition to their professional attire, and can make them feel more confident and put-together.

When considering personal style and preferences, there are a few key factors to keep in mind. These can include the size and shape of the watch, the color and materials used, and the overall design and aesthetic of the watch.

The size and shape of the watch can be particularly important for engineers, who may need a watch that is practical and comfortable to wear for long periods of time. A watch with a larger face may be easier to read, while a slimmer profile may be more comfortable to wear for extended periods of time.

The color and materials used in the watch can also be important to consider, as they can impact the overall look and feel of the watch. Stainless steel and leather are common materials used in watches and can provide a classic and timeless look that is well-suited to professional settings. Other materials, such as ceramic or titanium, can provide a more modern and high-tech aesthetic that may be better suited to certain engineers.

In summary, when choosing a watch for an engineer, it’s important to consider the purpose of the watch, price range, design and style, brand reputation, and personal preferences. By taking all of these factors into consideration, you can choose a watch that not only meets the specific needs of the engineer but also fits their personal style and preferences.

Top 9 Best Watches for Electricians [Non-Conductive Watches]

As an electrician, having a reliable and durable watch is essential to keep track of time and complete tasks efficiently. With so many options on the market, choosing the right watch can be overwhelming. In this article, we will explore the best watches for electricians and what to consider when making a purchase.

Electricians work in a variety of challenging environments and need a watch that can withstand rough conditions and keep accurate time. A good watch for electricians should be durable, water-resistant, and have features such as an easy-to-read display and a stopwatch or timer.

When choosing a watch for an electrician, there are several factors to consider, such as brand, price, style, features, and movement. Most importantly, you need to find a watch that is durable and robust, able to withstand shocks, bangs, and hard environments you subject it to as an electrician. And most importantly, it needs to be non-conducive so as to not give electric shocks or get damaged by electricity.

In this article, we will take a closer look at the best and most popular watches for electricians. Further on, we’ll also discuss the characteristics of a good watch for electricians and the factors to consider when making a purchase.

What is a non-conductive watch?

A non-conductive watch is a type of watch that is designed to be safe for use in electrical environments. This means that the watch is made from materials that do not conduct electricity, reducing the risk of electrical shock or interference with electronic equipment.

Non-conductive watches are typically made from materials such as plastic, rubber, or ceramic, which are non-conductive and provide insulation from electrical currents. These watches are suitable for use by electricians, technicians, and other professionals who work in electrical environments, where the risk of electrical shock is high. In general, resin or plastic is the most suitable options since ceramic, albeit not conducive, can get damaged from shocks against hard objects.

In addition to being non-conductive, a good non-conductive watch should also be durable, water-resistant, and easy to read in low-light conditions. It should also have features that are useful in electrical environments, such as a stopwatch, timer, or backlight.

Overall, a non-conductive watch is an important tool for electricians and other professionals who work in electrical environments, providing both safety and functionality.

Why are non-conductive watches important for electricians?

Non-conductive watches are important for electricians because they work in environments where there is a risk of electrical shock. Electricians often work with live electrical circuits, and a watch that conducts electricity could provide a path for electrical current to flow through the body, causing electrical shock or injury.

A non-conductive watch provides a barrier between the electrician and the electrical current, reducing the risk of electrical shock. By using a non-conductive watch, electricians can work with electrical equipment and circuits with confidence, knowing that their watch will not pose a hazard.

In addition to providing safety, non-conductive watches also offer features that are useful for electricians, such as water resistance, illumination, and a stopwatch or timer. This makes non-conductive watches a valuable tool for electricians, providing both safety and functionality in their working environment.

The best material for a non-conductive watch for electricians

When it comes to choosing a non-conductive material for a watch for electricians, there are a few options to consider. The best material depends on personal preference and the level of protection required.

One common non-conductive material used in watches is resin. Resin is a lightweight and durable material that is resistant to impacts, making it a good choice for outdoor and industrial use. Casio G-Shock is a popular watch brand that uses resin as the main material for many of their shock-resistant watches.

Another option is ceramic, which is a highly durable and scratch-resistant material. Ceramic watches are also lightweight and hypoallergenic, making them a good choice for those with sensitive skin. However, ceramic watches tend to be more expensive than watches made with other materials and may break and shatter if they are knocked against hard objects.

Finally, some non-conductive watches are made with carbon fiber, which is a lightweight and strong material that is resistant to impacts and scratches. Carbon fiber watches are also non-magnetic, making them a good choice for electricians who work around magnetic fields.

Without further ado, let’s have a look at the best and most popular non-conducive watches for electricians.

Top 10 Best Affordable Automatic Watches [List & Guide]

Are you looking for an affordable automatic watch that also offers great value for money? You’ve come to the right place.

What is an affordable watch?

There is a balance between affordability and quality that manufacturers always need to take into consideration. There is definitely no such thing as a fixed price or number that tells us what is affordable and what is not. This is because ”affordable” has a lot to do with perception. Affordability is not about the price per se. The definition is ”inexpensive; reasonably priced.” But the fact is that many think that luxury watches for thousands of dollars are reasonably priced because they feel they offer great value in form of quality and finish. At the same price, others may consider watches that cost no more than 100 dollars as affordable.

But to get to the point, in this article, we will include watches in different price ranges, but keep them under about $1500 since different people have different definitions of what an ”affordable” watch really is.

We have focused on watches that offer a great balance between affordability and quality. These are timepieces that have received excellent reviews and are considered great value for money.

What is an automatic watch?

An automatic watch is a watch that has a mechanical automatic movement inside. An automatic movement is a mechanical movement that is equipped with a rotor that rotates by movements, for example, whilst it is on the wrist. When the rotor rotates, it winds the mainspring, thus ”charging” the watch with energy. The movement then uses the energy in the mainspring to power it and display the time.

The practical benefit of an automatic watch is that it won’t run out of battery like quartz watches, meaning no need for battery replacements. Furthermore, you won’t have to manually wind the watch either, like you have to with a manual watch.

Automatic watches are widely popular thanks to their combination of mechanical craftsmanship and also practical functionality.

What defines a good watch?

The definition of a ”good” watch is all about value for money. In general, a 500-dollar watch isn’t going to be as good as a 5000-dollar watch as there is usually a correlation between the price and the quality. But if you also factor in the price, that’s when it gets more interesting. For example, a watch that costs 1000 dollars but gives an impression of low quality and has a cheap movement is simply overpriced and not “good”. On the other hand, a watch that costs 200 dollars but gives more or less the same feeling of quality can be considered “good”.

It’s impossible to make a definition of a ”good watch”, but quality and finish are always two important things. Then, of course, comes functions, mechanical performance, durability, and so on. It also depends on what type of watch is and what you plan to use it for.

Buyer’s guide to the best affordable automatic watch

As mentioned, choosing the best affordable automatic ultimately depends on what you are looking for. But to help you define just that, and to look for the best possible watch for your needs, take into consideration the following:

Size and dimensions

The size and dimensions are obviously important in order to find a watch that sits nicely and comfortably on your wrist. If you have a large wrist, you’ll likely favor larger and heftier watches, but if you have a small wrist, you should probably look for something smaller and sleeker. Do some research to find which size is ideal and then also factor in that not all watches wear the same depending on the design of the case and also things like thickness and lug-to-lug measurements.

Crystal

Watches use either mineral, acrylic, or sapphire crystals. Acrylic glass is essentially a form of plastic and therefore scratches very easily. Because this is the cheapest material of them all, they are usually found in the most affordable timepieces. Sapphire is the hardest material of them all and is extremely difficult to scratch. At the same time, this is the most expensive material, so you’ll usually only find sapphire crystals in the more expensive alternatives on the market. If you want a scratch-free crystal, however, it is wise to opt for a sapphire crystal watch.

Design and purpose

This one is really important. Watches come in all kinds of different designs and styles, from dive watches to dress watches, sports watches, and everything in between. The design and purpose of the watch are something that is very important to consider in order to find a watch that goes well with the occasions on which you’ll wear it but also to find a watch that can handle the situations you’ll subject it to. For example, if you are going diving and swimming, you cannot wear a dress watch as it is not waterproof nor durable enough to handle these situations.

On the contrary, if you want something that looks great with a suit and works well on formal occasions, you should look for a sleek, classic, and elegant dress watch that goes well with your outfit and is suitable for the occasion. For example, a dive watch with a colorful rubber strap won’t look very good with a suit, so it’s not only a matter of durability and function but also a matter of style and fashion.

Bracelet or strap

In general, watches are available either with a metal bracelet or a strap, usually leather, fabric, or rubber. Metal bracelets are more durable, sporty, and versatile, whilst leather straps, in general, are more elegant and more formal. Keep in mind that if you plan on going swimming, for example, it is not ideal to wear a leather strap as it will deteriorate.

Water-resistance

The water resistance you need will ultimately be dictated by the way you intend to wear your watch. If you plan on going swimming, you need to have an automatic watch that has a water resistance that is good enough to withstand this. On the other hand, if you’re just buying a dress watch and have no intentions of swimming with it, this is not as important.

Power reserve

This may or may not be important to you, but it’s still something to consider. Automatic watches have what is called a power reserve. The power reserve is the amount of power an automatic watch can store before it runs out of energy and stops. If you constantly wear your watch, the movement of the wrist will rotate the rotor and keep it going. But if you put your watch down, the rotor doesn’t rotate and therefore, the power reserve will ultimately run out of energy and stop the watch.

Some people have a better power reserve than others, and this can be practical for the times when you put down your watch and do not use it for a while. Affordable automatic watches usually have a power reserve of around 24 hours to 48 hours. The longer the power reserve, the better.

Movement

First off, you obviously need to be looking for an automatic movement (which all of the watches in this list have). But in addition, the quality of the automatic movement will vary a lot. Two of the most important considerations for any movement are accuracy and reliability. You want the movement to be robust, durable, and long-lasting. Of course, unless you’re a watch nerd that knows everything about the ins and outs of movements, it can be a bit difficult. But in general, buying a watch from a well-known and respected brand like the ones we have listed in this article will ensure that you are getting a high-quality movement with excellent performance.

There are generally also two additional functions that you may or may not be able to find in an automatic watch, namely a hacking function and a manual-winding function. A hacking function is when the seconds hand stops when you pull out the crown. The purpose of this is to allow you to set the time accurately down to the seconds. The manual winding function means that you will be able to manually wind the crown in order to generate energy for the movement, in addition to having the rotor rotate when you have it on your wrist. The most affordable automatic watches do not always have these functions, but if they are important to you, it can be good to check if the watch you are interested in has these functions.

What are the best automatic watches?

As mentioned, it ultimately comes down to your needs, preferences, and budget. As you have seen, automatic watches come in all kinds of different designs and executions in all kinds of different price ranges, so you’ll definitely be able to find one you like. But some of the most popular affordable automatic watch brands include Seiko, Tissot, Alpina, Orient, Frederique Constant, and Hamilton. These are all watch brands with a strong reputation, known for making high-quality watches.

Which is the cheapest automatic watch?

In general, automatic watches cost more than quartz watches due to the complexity of making them and the large number of tiny and delicate parts that are required to build the movement. When it comes to the most affordable automatic watches, Seiko is often on top of this list as they have some automatic watches that are priced at around, sometimes less than 100 dollars which is extremely impressive considering what you are getting. And still, they are known for their great quality and robustness, making them insanely great value for money.

Some of the cheapest automatic watches are the Seiko SNK809, the Seiko SNK795, the Seiko SNK385, and the Seiko SNKL55.

How long do automatic watches last?

Well, first off, we have the power reserve as discussed earlier. This is the amount of time the watch will last when fully charged and not in use so that the movement isn’t getting any power from the rotor that rotates.

Then we have the question of how long automatic watches last until they break, and the answer to that question is not as clear-cut. Unless you drop it and the movement breaks due to force or shocks. Generally, automatic watches do not break first. Instead, they start to perform poorly and lose their accuracy. When this happens, an automatic watch needs to be serviced by a watchmaker who then exchange worn-out parts and lubricate the movement. This is usually done within a timespan of a few years, but it depends on how the watch performs. If you buy a really affordable watch, it may cost more to have it serviced than to replace it, so if your watch needs servicing, you can always consult with a watchmaker and get a quote to see if it is worth having it serviced.

The good news is that if you look after your automatic watch, it can last for many years.

Top 11 Best Affordable GMT watches [List & Guide]

GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time, and whenever you hear the term ”GMT” being used in the context of watches, it refers to the watch having an additional hour hand – a GMT hand. This means that the watch actually has two hour hands. Why, you may ask?

Well, GMT watches have one hour hand for regular timekeeping, and the additional hour hand is used to allow you to actually keep track of multiple timezones simultaneously. To enable this, GMT watches have, together with the GMT hand, a 24-hour bezel which is the indicator of the hours. Some GMT watches have fixed GMT bezels, which only allow you to keep track of one additional timezone. But other, more advanced timepieces, are equipped with bidirectional rotating bezels which allow you to keep track of multiple timezones simultaneously by rotating the bezel.

Greenwich mean time is actually the solar time according to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. Unlike most time zones around the world, GMT is not affected by Daylight Savings.

The history of GMT stretches all the way back to 1884 when it was decided by an international convention that Greenwich would be the “mean time”, the ”reference time” against all of the other of the world’s time zones would be compared.

The first GMT watch

The first GMT watch ever made was the Rolex GMT-Master reference 6542 which was released in 1954. The GMT-Master was conceived after PanAm requested a timepiece from Rolex that would make it possible to keep track of multiple timezones simultaneously. This was particularly important for the PanAm pilots when flights started flying across timezones – across the Atlantic from the USA. This would enable the pilot to know the local time back at home, but at the same time, the local time – simultaneously.

Because of the great success of the GMT-Master, Rolex would come to add it to its standard collection of timepieces for the public.

Because of this, GMT watches are often associated with Rolex, or in general, more expensive timepieces. The good news is that GMT watches do not have to cost tens of thousands of dollars. In fact, there are plenty of affordable GMT watches on the market today to choose from. Worth having in mind, however, is that because GMT watches are more complex than regular timepieces, they do in general command a slightly higher price than the time-only timepieces.

The concept of ”affordable” is also very subjective. Whilst a gold Rolex GMT-Master watch can cost tens of thousands of dollars, other brands make them available starting from just a few hundred dollars. In that sense, we can call them affordable. This is great news since it means that GMT watches are not solely reserved for a selected few.

Best affordable GMT watches

As an Amazon Associate, we may earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you.

If you are looking for a watch that can keep track of multiple timezones simultaneously, a GMT is a must. In fact, we would even dare to say that every watch collector should have at least one GMT watch in their collection. Whether you are jet-setting or just traveling occasionally, the GMT feature can be truly useful for knowing the time at home, as well as the local time in the country you are in – all at the same time.

Without further ado, let’s look closer at the best affordable GMT watches.

 Victorinox FieldForce GMT

amazon

The Victorinox FieldForce GMT is available at just a few hundred dollars. Like most Victorinox timepieces, it has a sporty, military-inspired design with an emphasis on legibility. It is presented with a matte black dial with large Arabic numerals coated with a generous amount of Lumibrite for excellent legibility even in low-lit conditions.

It has a date window positioned at 3 o’clock, and unlike most GMT watches on the market, it doesn’t have a GMT 24-hour bezel. Instead, the bezel is reserved for 60-second markers. As such, the 24-hour indicator is presented on the inner part of the dial, and the watch is executed in a way that the GMT hand has an open oval, and inside this oval, you see the GMT time displayed, which is a really nice and unique design feature.

The watch is mostly monochrome and black for a sporty look, but for a touch of color, the seconds hand is painted red. All in all, the Victorinox FieldForce is a great everyday watch that is durable, robust, and versatile.

Specifications

  • Diameter: 42mm
  • Thickness: 11.3mm
  • Lug width: 21mm
  • Water resistance: 10ATM/100M/330 feet

Alpina Automatic Sport Watch AL-555DGS4H6

amazon

Alpina is a Swiss watch brand that is known for making high-quality, well-finished timepieces. As such, their watches are in the medium price range and are usually priced above 1000 USD. But with that said, they still offer exceptional value for money.

The AL-555DGS4H6 is inspired by an Alpina design from the 1970s, which explains its vintage-inspired and funky design. It is presented with a stainless steel case with a diameter of 42mm, designed with a barrel case design. On top of the case is a boded sapphire crystal. This watch does not have a bidirectional bezel, instead, the 24-hour GMT markers have been positioned around the outer edge of the dial. The good news is that the internal ring is rotatable, allowing you to keep track of more than two time zones simultaneously. The omitting of the bezel allows for a more classic design and gives room for the beautiful case with a striking finish and combination of brushed and polished.

The watch is powered by the AL-555 Automatic caliber and features an in-house modified GMT movement. Thanks to this movement, the wearer can keep track of 3 time zones simultaneously.

The dial has a beautiful black/grey sunburst finish at the center, and the GMT disc around the outer edge is made white for contrast. At 3 o’clock, you also have a date window which is always convenient to have.

All in all, this is just a great watch built with high-quality, great performance, and really nice attention to detail in every single aspect – from the polishing and brushing of the case to the applied metal hour markers on the dial.

Tissot TIST0694394403100 Titanium GMT

amazon

Tissot is a well-respected Swiss watch brand that is known for making high-quality yet affordable timepieces that offer great value for money.

It has a simple and classic design which is great if you are looking for something more discreet that can work for everyday wear. The watch has a titanium case with a diameter of 43mm and a water resistance of 100m/330 feet. What is so interesting about this watch is that it does the GMT function a lot differently. Instead of incorporating an additional hour hand at the center, it is equipped with a 24-hour sub-dial which presents the GMT hour time. The ”downside” of this is of course that it only allows you to keep track of one additional time zone.

Because of the titanium case, the watch is very light and comfortable to wear. It features a simple and elegant white dial with skeletonized hands and a date window positioned at 3 o’clock. On top of the case sits an anti-reflective sapphire crystal.

Specifications

  • Water resistance: 100m/330 feet

Hamilton Jazzmaster GMT H32695131

amazon

Hamilton is known for its military-inspired timepieces, which is the result of Hamilton’s rich heritage and history of making such timepieces, in particular during the second world war.

The GMT function that this watch offers is really great as it allows you to keep track of far more than just 2 or 3 timezones. This watch is equipped with an additional GMT-hour hand which is painted red, making it easy to spot. Around the outer edge of the dial, it has 24-hour markers, but in addition, at the very edge, it has lots of cities printed. This is great because whichever city the GMT hand points at is the current time in that specific city. With that said, this is the ultimate watch for the jet-setter.

Affordable GMT watches buyer’s guide

Just like when buying any type of watch, there are a number of things you want to take into consideration to make sure you find the watch that is perfect for your needs, style, and preferences.

Movement – quartz or mechanical?

The first thing you want to consider is whether you want a quartz or mechanical watch. GMT watches exist with either, so ultimately, it comes down to your preference. In general, most quartz watches are affordable, and most luxury GMT watches are automatic, so this is also something that comes into play. At the same time, there are some affordable alternatives for automatic GMT watches such as the  Longines we looked at above, so you’re not limited to quartz when you are looking for an affordable GMT.

Purpose and style

The purpose and style of the watch will depend on your own personal needs and taste. It will also depend on how and when you intend to use it. GMT watches are available in all kinds of different styles, although the GMT function is closely associated with “tool watches”. Therefore consider if you are looking for an elegant timepiece to wear in the office and during formal occasions, or if you plan to wear it during your everyday life and want something more sporty and casual that you can wear at any time. The purpose of the watch will naturally dictate the style of the watch, and there really is a lot to choose from, so defining these things will narrow down the alternatives and make it easier to choose one that suits your taste the best.

Water resistance

Depending on the purpose of your watch, the water resistance may or may not be important. If you will wear your watch on formal occasions with a suit, you’ll likely not come anywhere near the water. But if you are going to wear it as a sports watch and even plan to go swimming with it, having decent water resistance can be quite important to make sure you don’t have to take off your watch or avoid swimming just because you don’t have a suitable watch.

How much does a GMT watch cost?

The fact of the matter is that GMT watches vary a lot in price – just like most watches. The good news is that the GMT function is not only reserved for luxury and super-expensive timepieces but can be found in the more affordable price range. We can, however, say that since the GMT function is a bit complicated, GMT watches tend to cost more than watches that do not have this function. But as you have seen above, there are some really great affordable alternatives for GMT watches.

On the contrary, there are also plenty of luxury GMT watches on the market that cost tens of thousands of dollars, so there is a great gap here, and a wide selection for all kinds of budgets.

Is a GMT watch useful?

A GMT watch can definitely be extremely useful. Unlike many other functions in watches, the GMT function is certainly one that can be truly useful and one that a lot of people actually use in their everyday life.

Naturally, it is particularly suitable for frequent travelers who travel across different time zones. And keeping track of what the time is, for example, local time, but also the home time is something that can be very practical for many reasons.

What is a true GMT watch?

It can be good to know that there are variants of the GMT function. There are those that are called “True GMTs”, and these are the watches with which you can adjust the local hour hand independently. Thanks to an independently set hour hand, you can adjust the local hour very easily.

Due to the increased complication and technicality of making one, it’s more uncommon to see this function in the most affordable GMT options, but there is a selection of true GMT watches on the market that you can choose from if this is an important feature for you.

Rolex released the first true GMT watch in 1983 with the GMT-Master II (previously named GMT-Master) to highlight the new true GMT function. This watch would allow you to independently adjust the hour hand without stopping the seconds hand or disturbing the other hands. And at the time, it was a huge improvement to the GMT function and a great achievement for Rolex.

With that said, the first GMT watches were not what we call “true GMT” watches today which is quite interesting as you would think that the original is what is always considered the “true” version, but that’s a topic for a completely different article.

In addition to the true GMT function, you also have watches where the GMT hand is independently adjusted, instead of having an independently adjustable hour hand. This is very convenient when you want to track a second timezone whilst you are at home, but it is less convenient when you are traveling.

But at the end of the day, the difference in the time it takes to set a GMT watch compared to a true GMT watch is not huge, so it’s not really a problem.

Are GMT watches dress watches?

Interestingly, this is a question we receive quite frequently, but the answer to that question is that the style of a watch (for the most part) is not dictated by one single function. For example, just because a watch has a sub-second on the dial doesn’t mean it is a dress watch. In the same way, just because a watch has a GMT function doesn’t mean it is a sports watch.

Ultimately, the answer to that question is that it depends. As you have seen, GMT watches come in all kinds of different styles and designs, so a GMT watch can definitely be a dress watch. GMT watches are not dress watches by definition, but they certainly can be. At the same time, the GMT function is closely associated with tool watches and functionality, which is why a lot of GMT watches lean more towards the sporty side in terms of design.

Which Casio watch should you choose? – Casio Buyer’s guide

As you can see, Casio has a large collection of timepieces for all kinds of different purposes, needs, and styles. With that said, anyone should be able to find a Casio watch. Therefore, when looking for a Casio watch, you need to define what you’re looking for.

Digital or analog?

Casio makes both digital and analog watches. But since Casio is primarily a company with a tech-related focus and heritage, their focus when it comes to watches will naturally be on digital watches. With this said, Casio tends to have more digital watches to choose from than analog, but that is not to say that they don’t have a lot to choose from.

Consider whether you prefer a digital or analog watch. Both of these of course have their pros and cons, but watch enthusiasts tend to favor analog watches since they have a more traditional look and design.

On the other hand, digital watches are, for obvious reasons, often able to incorporate more functions and features, so if that is what you’re looking for, it could be more suitable.

A lot of Casio’s digital watches are made under the G-shock brand, meaning you can expect durable, robust, and functional timepieces, but there are some digital watches from Casio that aren’t made under the G-Shock brand as well.

G-Shock or not?

Casio has regular watches and G-Shock watches that focus on durability and toughness. Casio’s watches are naturally more classic and less bulky, making them more suitable for everyday wear. If you’re looking for a tough timepiece for outdoor use and in harsh conditions, a G-Shock is the way to go. But if you want something more versatile that you can wear on many different occasions, you should probably choose a different alternative, although, Casio does have some G-Shock watches that are made to be more versatile which you can look closer at.

Ultimately, it’s a matter of preference and what type of watch you want.

What functions do you need?

As mentioned, digital watches will generally be far more functional than analog watches. The most advanced digital G-Shock watches include tons of different functions and features such as a barometer, thermometer, altimeter, and so on. Casio’s most simple watches only include a timekeeping function and perhaps also a date function.

With that said, you want to consider what you need in a watch. Are there any functions that are absolutely crucial for you to have in a watch? Or do you only need a convenient way of telling the time? The answer to that question will help you narrow down the alternatives considered and find the perfect watch for your needs.

Are Casio watches good quality?

Yes definitely! Casio watches are known for their great quality at very affordable prices. This is especially true for the Casio G-shock range which consists of timepieces that are built to be robust, qualitative, and long-lasting. But regardless of which watch you choose, Casio is one of the best watch brands on the market today when it comes to the relationship between quality and price. In fact, few watch brands in the same price range are able to compete with the quality of Casio.

There are several reasons for this, but the most important ones are Casio’s large production numbers which keep the price per unit down. Furthermore, Casio has a long history of making timepieces and has developed great skill and expertise over the years.

If you’re looking for serious quality and durability, and a watch that will never let you down, Casio G-shock is arguably one of the best choices on the market. Casio has set many records related to durability with its G-Shock watches, including a Guinness world record for toughness. With this in mind, if you’re looking for a seriously tough and qualitative timepiece that can withstand virtually anything, G-Shock watches are amongst the best in the game.

Are Casio watches tough?

Yes, Casio watches, specifically, Casio G-Shock watches are built to be extremely tough, robust, and durable.  All G-Shock watches are thoroughly tested by Casio R&D for shock resistance and offer a water resistance of at least 200 meters. G-shock is known as “the watch that never breaks” and with all right. You can subject these timepieces to shocks, bangs, and extreme temperatures, yet they will likely never let you down.

Or, in their own words:

“The most durable digital and analog-digital watches in the industry, trusted by military personnel, law enforcement, surfers and outdoor enthusiasts around the world.”

The Casio G-Shock came about as an idea by Kikuo Ibe who was the engineer responsible for the external design of Casio watches at the time. During an internal meeting more than 35 years ago, he said “I want to make a timepiece that will not break, even if dropped.”. The proposal came about after a watch was dropped on the floor and broke during work. This was and is of course nothing strange considering the fact that watches feature delicate movements. But at the same time, it was unthinkable at the time to create a watch that would be able to withstand a drop or fall. But the idea was conceived and they started working on developing a watch according to this idea.

In 1983, the first G-shock model was released – the model DW-5000C. It was designed with a square design that has become iconic for the G-Shock.

The rest is history, and the G-Shock is today known as one of the toughest watches on the market.

Are Casio watches made in Japan?

Casio makes its watches in a number of different places and countries but primarily not in Japan. Casio makes some of its watches in Japan, but they also tend to be slightly more expensive than those that are made in other countries.

Until around the 1980s, most of Casio’s watches were made in Japan, but nowadays, production in Japan is primarily reserved for the more expensive models, including the premium range of G-Shock watches. Casio has one factory in Yamagata and another one in Hamura.

Casio’s premium range of G-Shock models, for example, are designed and developed in Hamura, Japan, and then assembled at the company’s manufacture in Yamagata.

If we talk about the more affordable Casio watches, many of them, such as G-Shock Pro Trek watches are assembled in Thailand.

What watch do Navy SEALs wear?

Navy SEALs often favor the Casio G-Shock DW-6600 for its performance and functionality. This watch has everything that a SEAL needs in a watch. It’s tough, extremely durable, water-resistance, and lightweight. In addition, they’re also affordable, meaning they won’t break the bank in case they need to replace them.

How long do Casio watches last?

The question of how long Casio watches last depends on a lot of different factors. This includes what model you have, how you wear it, how you take care of it, and what movement it has.

The power reserve/battery life is one thing, but how long they last until they break is another. If you accidentally drop your watch (non-G-Shock), it may break immediately. But unless you subject it to great shocks or extremely harsh conditions, G-Shock watches can last for many years, even decades.

How long does the Casio battery last?

When it comes to battery life, Casio has a large selection of timepieces that have a battery life of  10 years. In addition, they also have solar-powered watches that you don’t need to change the battery for since they are charged by solar and ambient light.

Most non-solar and standard quartz watches, including Casio, have a battery life of 2-3 years, but it depends on the model, functions, and other factors

Automatic Watch Running Fast or Slow – What to Do?

The truth is, an automatic watch will never be 100% accurate. They consist of hundreds of parts, and somehow, they are assembled in a way that makes them tell the time. It’s rather fascinating if you think about it.

But with that said, your automatic watch will almost never be 100% accurate, and that’s okay. But it comes down to how much it runs too fast or too slow per day. Many watches have certifications in terms of accuracy, with the most well-known certification being COSC. One of the criteria for « chronometer » certification is the average daily rate on the first 10 days of testing: from -4 sec to +6 sec., or up to 10 seconds per day.

Manufacturers normally give the specifications for their watches in terms of accuracy. If the watch is far from these specifications, there may be something wrong with the watch.

But seeing that a mechanical movement is a delicate piece of mechanical craftsmanship, there are many reasons why an automatic movement is running fast or slow. But that a movement is not accurate does not mean that the watch needs to be thrown away and there is nothing you can do about it. Quite the opposite. With the right care and servicing, a mechanical watch can last for generations.

Let’s look at some of the most common reasons why an automatic watch is running fast or slow – and what you can do about it.

Automatic watch running fast or slow – factors that affect the accuracy

Magnetism

Magnetism can interfere with a watch’s accuracy. A mechanical movement consists of small metal parts, and magnetism can affect how it operates. Normally, it is the hairspring that is magnetized, and since this is the beating heart of an automatic watch, the magnetism will naturally affect its accuracy.

Magnetism tends to shorten the rotation of the balance wheel and increases the beat rate, hence a magnetized watch tends to run far too fast. The solution is to demagnetize the watch, and this is done very easily. In fact, you won’t even have to open the watch. You just need the right instrument. Assuming you don’t have a demagnetizing tool at your disposal, any watchmaker will have it and will be able to demagnetize the watch in minutes.

Temperatures

Of course, temperatures can have an effect on the accuracy of an automatic watch. When subject to warm or cold temperatures, the parts in the movement can expand or contract, resulting in reduced or increased friction – thus potentially affecting the accuracy of the watch. Many watches can handle temperature variations to some degree, others are built to handle large temperature variations and still keep time well.

If you put your watch through large temperature variations one or two times, it will likely not be affected, but if you consistently subject it to large variations, it can affect how accurately it keeps the time.

Gravity and shocks

Gravity always affects a watch’s accuracy. Gravity affects the external forces that the inside of the mechanical movement has to operate in. Since the force of gravity changes depending on which position the watch is in, it is difficult to predict how it will affect your watch, but the truth is, there’s not much to do about this. But this brings us to the next point which is shocks. Shocks can have a great negative impact on the accuracy of an automatic watch.

Of course, if you drop your watch or subject it to shocks, it will impact the inner components of the watch, more or less. In the worst case, dropping your watch can cause something to break, and thus the watch stop. In other cases, it may impact components so that the watch runs slowly or fast. If the case is that you have dropped your watch, and after that event that it doesn’t keep the time very well, or it doesn’t work at all, components may be broken or damaged. In this case, you need to take the watch to a watchmaker.

Some manufacturers implement shock absorbers in their movements but bear in mind that despite this, a watch will not last everything.

Rolex shock absorber

Poor condition/old movement

This is the most common reason why an automatic movement is running fast or slow.

An automatic movement, just like any other mechanical piece of engineering needs to be serviced regularly in order to function properly. Some people are surprised to hear this, but what would happen if you didn’t service a car? It would eventually break down of course.

If you want your automatic watch to last for a long time, it needs to be taken care of properly, which involves servicing by a skilled watchmaker.

One of the main reasons for a service is that oils and lubricants run dry or get old. This will naturally increase the friction on the parts that need the lubricants the most. If ignoring servicing, it will mean that the watch operates without the necessary oil, this means increased friction on the different parts, and eventually broken parts. With that said, a service may be more expensive if you want it for too long rather than having it serviced regularly.

How to fix a watch that runs fast or slow

Test your movement

The first step to potentially fixing a watch that runs fast or slow is to properly understand how it is performing and what accuracy it has.

There are apps you can use to check how accurate it is over a 24-hour period, but the best and easiest way to check your movement’s performance is by using a timegrapher, as seen below. A timegrapher is a tool/machine with which you essentially measure the health of your movement. It does so by using a microphone that listens to the beats of the movement and displays it on a screen. By doing this, it can give information about the movement’s beat rate, amplitude, and beat error within just a few seconds. This allows you to get detailed information about the health of your movement so you can solve its potential issues accordingly, and see if your movement has any issues with accuracy.

Regulating

In some cases, your watch does not need a complete service. It may just need to be regulated. Regulating a watch means adjusting the beat rate to compensate for whether it is running too fast or too slow. Regulating a movement is an easy fix that can be done within minutes.

Adjusting the movement

Another way to fix an automatic watch that runs too fast or too slow is by adjusting the movement. This is done by adjusting the balance wheel. It is done so that the balance is adjusted to different positions, which can otherwise affect its accuracy.

Demagnetize

As mentioned earlier, your watch may be magnetized, and in this case, you need to demagnetize it. You can either leave it to the professionals or do it yourself by getting a demagnetizer. Demagnetizing a watch only takes a couple of seconds and is very easy. It’s also very cheap.

Servicing/ complete overhaul

As mentioned earlier, the most common reason why an automatic watch runs too fast or too slow is the fact that it is in need of a service and a complete overhaul. Similar to a car, oils need to be changed, parts may need replacing, and adjusting may be necessary. Different brands have different recommended service intervals. Others, however, argue that when the watch stops working, that’s when it is time for a service.

During a complete overhaul, the watchmaker completely disassembles the movement and cleans it. Then, the parts are inspected and broken and worn-out parts are replaced. Then, the movement is reassembled, parts lubricated, and the movement is tested and adjusted for accuracy. If your watch is old, then it is probably in need of an overhaul. If your watch is new, however, or just a few years old, it is probably not in need of a complete service.

Which luxury watch brands hold their value best?

This is a question that we get asked all the time.

And the truth is that the answer to that question is quite tricky.

If you’re into watches, you’ve probably heard about the huge differences in prices on Rolex watches, in particular, sports steel watches from Rolex when they were made and today.

You’ve probably also heard many people say ”watches are great investments” and that they hold their value really well, but the truth is that this topic is quite complex, and there’s not just one fixed answer and truth.

Let’s begin with the topic of buying watches for investment purposes. In this article, you won’t just be introduced to a few brands that you should look at buying. You’ll also learn some tips and tricks to buying watches that will hold their value well or relatively well.

Which luxury watch brands hold their value: watches as an investment?

The topic of buying watches as an investment is slightly controversial.

The reason is that on one side, we have the people who say that if you truly love watches, you shouldn’t pay much thought to whether or not the watch you want to own will depreciate in value or be a good deal, since doing this limits you from buying watches that you truly like and enjoy just because you don’t want to lose money.

Rolex 116710BLNR

In other words, some people argue that if you ask the question ”which watch brands and watches hold their value best?”, you’re not a true watch enthusiast, and whether that is the case or not, we’ll leave no opinion.

But there are, on the contrary, some upsides to asking the question about which watches hold their value best. First off, there’s no secret that watches in general cost a lot of money. This means that if you make a bad purchase and buy a watch that doesn’t hold its value very well, you’ll lose money on that purchase when you sell it. Now, some people don’t care if they lose money on their watches, because they consider that the loss from the watch was worth the joy the watch brought while owning it.

Rolex Yacht-Master 116621

But there’s no denying that if you can, the most ideal thing is to own a watch for some time, enjoy it, and then sell it for the same that you bought it for, slightly less than you bought it for, or slightly more.

The benefit of this is that if you’re like most watches enthusiasts, you don’t have a bottomless watch account, and so if you buy watches that tend to depreciate in value a lot, your watch account will become smaller, and ultimately, this will ”slow down” your possibilities in owning more watches and experiencing more of what is out there.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with buying watches that will depreciate in value. In fact, if you really like a watch, it may be worth buying it even though you’ll lose money on it. But this is up to you.

If you’re a person who likes to feel that you’ve made a great or relatively good deal, you probably want to buy watches that tend to hold their value relatively well out of principle, but which watches should you look towards buying?

Omega Speedmaster moonwatch .005

Buying preowned

Buying watches pre-owned is often a great way to minimize your loss on a watch, since, just like with cars, watches tend to depreciate most rapidly once they are taken from the store and sold on the secondhand market. Now, there are some exceptions to this, in particular, watches that have a long waiting list and are extremely popular, but for the vast majority of watches and watch brands, this is not the case.

If you, for example, look at this Hublot watch:

You can see that the retail price is €90,300.

On the secondhand market, however, the price for the same watch starts at roughly €55,000. That’s quite a huge difference.

Which Luxury Watch Brands Hold Their Value Best?

So only making the decision to not buy brand new will – in most cases, minimize your loss on a watch, but again, there are a few exceptions to that rule. Then of course, if you really want to buy brand new, and prefer the experience of doing so, above making a better deal, then you should do that, but on second thought, you probably wouldn’t be here if that would be the case.

Common principles about luxury watches

Now, it’s really difficult to mention brands when talking about which brands and watches hold their value best, because the truth is that it depends, and it varies between the watch you choose to buy.

Overall, most new watches will lose money, and this is why buying pre-owned is a good first step to making a better deal.

Something to have in mind is what it is that actually affects a watch’s resale value. The answer is of course demand on the secondhand market, but also the prestige and reputation, and how people view the brand.

Omega Seamaster diver 300M ceramic

The more exclusive, prestigious, and well-respected a watch brand is, the better its watches will retain their value on the secondhand market. Now, this is also the reason why some watches cost more on the secondhand market than the retail price because the demand is greater than the supply from the retailers, and the only real way is to buy it on the secondhand market.

Here are a few brands whose watches tend to hold their value quite well on the secondhand market:

  • Rolex
  • Patek Philippe
  • Audemars Piguet
  • Jaeger-LeCoultre
  • Vacheron Constantin

Now, it’s important that you read these brands with a big asterisk next to them because they come with more exceptions than not. Also, since the watch market is always changing, what may be the reality today may not be the truth tomorrow.

As mentioned, there are a great number of factors that affect the resell value of a watch, and the most important is obviously demand. If there’s no demand for a particular watch brand on the secondhand market, then naturally the price you’ll be able to sell it for will be substantially lower than the retail price.

Furthermore, something that also affects how well the watch holds its value is whether or not, and how much the retailers discount. When retailers discount a lot, it tends to harm the value of the watch brand long-term.

Rolex Explorer II 216570

Something that greatly affects the resell value of luxury watches over time is price increases. Many, if not most luxury watch brands tend to make price increases on a regular basis, and what happens when the retail price gets higher is that the prices for those watches tend to become higher on the secondhand market as well. This is what has happened with a number of watch brands, including Rolex, and this together with an increasing demand leads to a huge surge in prices, and thus a good investment over time.

The fact of the matter is that how well watch brands hold their value tends to be quite irrational. First off, we know that in material, watches are not worth nearly as much as their price. And this is why watches are quite tricky, compared to for example gold, gems, or jewels where you have the actual material value plays the most central role. In fact, believe it or not, a steel Rolex can actually cost more than a full-gold Rolex. The same obviously goes for other brands as well. And when you think about it, it’s quite crazy.

If we are to give a tip for buying luxury watches that will hold their value relatively well, or even appreciate, it is to buy a Rolex sports watch in stainless steel.

Tudor Black Bay Bronze

Of course, you want to do your homework first before buying it, but there seems to always be a great demand for steel sports Rolexes on the secondhand market, which naturally keeps the prices up, and even drives them up.

If you want to see the price evolvement on sports steel Rolexes, just look at what the retail price for these watches was 10 – 20 years ago, and then look at what those watches sell for today. It’s safe to say that they are quite good investments.

Vintage

Vintage is a tricky section of watches, and if you are going to buy vintage watches because you want them to hold their value, it’s important that you know what you are doing.

Now, the good news is that vintage watches have already passed the test of time, and so have the prices for them. Today, the vintage Rolex market is especially hot, with prices having skyrocketed in just a few years on vintage stainless steel Rolex sports watches in particular. Just like with everything, if you are going to buy vintage watches, it’s crucial that you know what you are doing, you know the market, and understand what’s what.

Rolex Submariner 16610

But if you know vintage watches well, and you know what you are doing, vintage watches can be a great investment.

It’s also important that you have in mind that there are no guarantees about the way the market will evolve in the future, but the more you’re educated in watches and how the market is going, the more likely you’ll be to make a good deal on your watch and buy watches that won’t lose a lot in value.

Choose metal wisely

If you look at the market, the demand for stainless steel watches is much higher than the demand for gold or two-tone watches. Watches in steel tend to hold their value better than those of gold, and this has to do with the fact that gold watches have a higher retail price, and the demand for them is thus not as high on the secondhand market as fewer people can afford them. But also because people prefer steel over gold. Now there are of course exceptions to this rule, as there are gold watches that can be really good investments as well, but generally speaking.

Rolex Yacht-Master 116621

As such, if you are looking to buy a watch that will hold its value well, or that you’ll even make money on, it’s better to look at buying a stainless steel watch. This also generally goes for watches with diamonds.

Rolex Daytona 116508 Green dial

Condition, condition, condition

The condition is obviously something that affects a watch’s value.

A watch that is in brand-new condition will obviously be worth more than a watch that is scratched up and worn frequently.

Age is something that also affects a watch’s value, especially if it is the age where the warranty is about to or has just run out.

Also, the box and papers are also quite important for a watch’s value. Not to mention vintage watches as these are becoming more and rarer.

How much does a watch depreciate?

If you look at how much a watch depreciates when bought from the retailer and then sold on the secondhand market, it obviously varies a lot. Brands that don’t hold their value as well as Rolex, such as brands like Breitling, Tag Heuer, and Omega, tend to lose between 40-50%, but this is of course when we’re talking short-term, and it’s really difficult to know what will happen if you look at the watch’s value long-term. Do note, however, that there will always be exceptions to this.

The good news is that if you buy these watches on the secondhand market, someone else has already taken the hit, which means that you’ll most likely not lose a lot – if anything.

It’s also worth adding that how much a watch depreciates can depend on a number of things, but at its core, it is about supply and demand. This means that a particular watch from a brand whose watches generally don’t hold its value very well may hold its value extremely well if the demand for it is there.

Why a Swiss watch?

Swiss watchmaking is synonymous with quality and craftsmanship. Switzerland is considered the capital of watchmaking, and this is not by random. In fact, most of the world’s most prestigious watchbands in the world have their factories and headquarters there. In addition, most of the world’s most well-known luxury watch brands were founded in Switzerland.

This includes brands such as:

  • Vacheron Constantin
  • Omega
  • Audemars Piguet
  • Blancpain

And of course many more…

Most Swiss watches have the text ”Swiss Made” at the very bottom of the dial, which makes it possible to identify them.

The fact is that there are several criteria (According to a law set in 1971) that watches need to meet in order for them to be able to call themselves ” Swiss-made”. These are:

  • The movement needs to be from Switzerland
  • The final inspection needs to be done in Switzerland
  • The movement needs to be put into the case in Switzerland.
  • At least 60% of the manufacturing costs took place in Switzerland

With that said, the label ”Swiss made” is not only a stamp that tells a watch was made in Switzerland, but more so, it is also proof of quality. So not only does the Swiss Made label resonate well in a watch in the sense that many of the world’s top watches are made there, but it is also a reassuring label that you are getting a quality watch.

What is an automatic watch?

An automatic watch is simply a watch that is powered by an automatic, mechanical movement. This is a mechanical movement that features a rotor that rotates when the watch moves, for example when it is on the wrist. When the rotor rotates, it winds the mainspring and thus generates energy for the movement. This means that you won’t have to replace batteries, nor consistently have to wind the watch. This is a practical but also appealing mechanical piece of technology.

What is affordable?

The term subjective is not clear-cut because it obviously depends on who asks, but for this article, we have listed watches that cost less than 1000 USD (with 1 exception). Of course, there is no fixed rule as to what an ”affordable” watch really is, but in this post, we have focused not only on the price but also on the manufacturer and the reputation they have.

Therefore, without further ado, let’s have a look at some of the top best affordable Swiss automatic watches that are manufactured by reputable and well-known Swiss watch brands that are known for quality and long-lasting timepieces.

Buyer’s guide – Affordable Swiss Automatic Watches

First of all, as discussed earlier, the term “affordable is” subjective is not clear-cut because it obviously depends on who asks. Some people consider no more than 500 dollars as affordable, while others would consider a 1000-dollar swiss watch affordable. In addition, I would say that because Swiss watches are known for being more luxurious and more expensive in general, Swiss watches have a higher level of what is considered affordable. For example, many people perceive a Swiss watch at 2000 dollars affordable, simply because they compare it with other luxury Swiss watch brands such as Rolex or even Patek Philippe which cost considerably more.

In comparison, when it comes to, for example, Japanese watches, most people would say that a 1000-dollar Japanese watch isn’t affordable, as they are comparing that with watches for a few hundred (at most) from the likes of Casio or Seiko.

So with this said, it is something you should take into consideration when looking for a Swiss automatic watch. What do you consider affordable? And more importantly, what is your budget?

When buying your Swiss automatic watch, there are, just like when buying any other watch, some things you want to take into consideration. The most important questions you need to ask yourself are:

  • What size do I want? The size of the watch you choose depends, to a large extent, on your wrist size, but also on the occasion on which you wear it and the type of watch you buy. For example, if you buy a dress watch, it makes sense to choose a smaller size. But if you want a robust dive watch, buying a larger size that goes well with its purpose may make more sense.
  • What movement do I want? Since you are here, you have already decided on buying an automatic watch, but there are also quartz or hand-wound as well
  • What water resistance do I need? Depending on how you will wear your watch, water resistance may or may not be important. The water resistance you need will also likely reflect in the type of watch that you opt for.
  • Do I want a dress or a sports watch?
  • For what occasions will I wear my watch? Depending on the occasion you plan to wear your watch, you should choose your watch accordingly. If you want a versatile and sporty timepiece, you’ll lean toward this type of watch. But if you plan to use it in the office with a suit, it will probably make more sense to buy a more elegant dress watch.
  • What is my budget? Defining your budget will make it easier for you to narrow down your alternatives and make a decision. As you have seen, Swiss watches are available in all kinds of different price ranges. From a few hundred to tens of thousands.

Is a Swiss watch worth the money?

Yes, Swiss watches are considered to be worth the money. Swiss watches haven’t gotten the reputation they have for no reason. They are known to be qualitative, robust, reliable, and pay close attention to the materials and details. With that said, you can, in general, expect that you are getting a high-quality, well-made timepiece when you buy a Swiss watch. You could say that the Swiss-made marking is a seal of quality, craftsmanship, and heritage.

In general, due to the reputation and prestige that comes with Swiss-made watches, you are paying a slight premium, but this is also backed up by the fact that you are getting a qualitative product. Swiss-made watches are made for those who enjoy fine watchmaking, and craftsmanship, and for those who appreciate great quality.

The legal definition requires that at least 60% of the watch’s component cost, besides the manufacturing, assembly, encasing, and inspecting, have arisen in Switzerland. In addition, the movements or components used to manufacture it have to be assembled and verified in Switzerland. Furthermore, the watch’s movement needs to have been cased-up in Switzerland. The manufacturer also needs to conduct the final inspection in Switzerland.

In general, there are a number of things that set Swiss watches apart from other timepieces. Apart from the cost aspect and the criteria above (and the fact that the Swiss have a long reputation for high quality and great expertise in watchmaking), there are no other criteria in regard to manufacturing. But some things that are common for Swiss watches (but not mandatory) that make them so great are:

  • They often use sapphire crystals
  • They are often made by hand
  • They normally use high-quality solid 316L steel
  • They normally use metal gears for the mechanical movements

All of the above things, most importantly the use of high-quality materials and careful inspections result in timepieces that can last for a long time, sometimes even for generations.

Which are the best affordable Swiss watch brands?

We have already looked at some of the most popular and well-known affordable Swiss watch brands in the list above. But to give you an even greater selection, the most popular affordable Swiss watch brands (in no particular order) are:

  • Tissot
  • Longines
  • Hamilton

  • Raymond Weil
  • Bulova

How Much of Rolex Profits go to Charity?

You have probably heard before that Rolex is a non-profit organization. So what does this mean exactly? And is it true that Rolex donates 90% of all its profits? In this post, we’ll get to the bottom of Rolex’s ownership structure and how Rolex does its charity work.

To understand Rolex’s charity work, we need to get to the bottom of its ownership structure and how the company is set up.

Rolex non-profit organization and ownership

Rolex is a Swiss company, registered in Geneva, Switzerland, and is named Rolex S.A. Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf founded the company in London, England but eventually relocated to Geneva, Switzerland for various reasons, including high import taxes on luxury items, in particular gold, after World War I. Wilsdorf registered the company Montres Rolex S.A. in Geneva in 1920. Eventually, the name was changed to the name that is still used today, Rolex S.A. for simplicity.

Wilsdorf had a 100% ownership stake in the company but that came to change after his second wife Florence Frances May Wilsdorf-Crotty died in 1944. Hans had no children and following the death of his wife, he was left alone and evaluated his life situation. To commemorate his wife, and to safeguard the future of his lifework, Rolex, he set up the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation. In 1960, he gave 100% of his ownership stake in Rolex to the foundation. Since then, Rolex has been owned and controlled by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation private foundation under Swiss law, established in Carouge (in the canton of Geneva).

Rolex, Hans Wilsdorf, and financials

Since Rolex is a foundation under Swiss law, all profits from Rolex are tax-free. All of Rolex’s excess profits are directly put into the foundation. Rolex has a profit of about 1 billion Francs per year with a net profit margin of about 20% (of course varying from year-to-year).

In Switzerland, there is no legal requirement to disclose charitable donations under law, and as such, it is not known to the public how much of Rolex’s excess profits is being donated to charity. But regardless, considering the major amount of profit that Rolex moves to the foundation, it’s still a substantial amount to fund various projects. And if we take a look at some of the philanthropical work that the foundation is responsible for, it’s evident that it has done a lot of good for society and for Switzerland.

“Behind the Rolex crown is a way of thinking about our place in the world and an aspiration to contribute. We call this perpetual spirit. It is based on a fundamental belief in unlimited human potential, in continuous improvement, in always pushing the boundaries and taking the long-term view. Our watches are built to last. So is our contribution to future generations.”

Hans Wilsdorf board

The board of the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation is led by chairman Costin van Berchem since 2013. The board consists of a total of eight members.

The General Secretariat of the foundation is led by Marc Maugué. In total, the Hans Wilsdorf foundation has thirteen employees whose purpose is to analyze and manage requests for donations, as well as to allocate the foundation’s funds for various charity initiatives.

Hans Wilsdorf Foundation’s purpose and focus

When Hans Wilsdorf set up the foundation in 1960,  he did so for two primary reasons. The first was to secure the future of Rolex for a long time ahead. Since Rolex is 100% owned by a foundation, it cannot be sold, nor does it distribute dividends to outside shareholders. Rolex cannot also ever be sold or split up into different companies.

Moreover, due to the ownership structure, Rolex is able to share only limited information, which is one of the key reasons why the company is one of the most secretive (and thus also mystical) Swiss luxury watch brands.

This helps secure the future of Rolex and Hans Wilsdorf’s legacy, or as Rolex itself describes it:

“Today, Hans Wilsdorf’s legacy goes on and on – perpetually – just like his self-winding watches, as he made sure that the proceeds from Rolex would be used as a continuing investment in future generations.”

Another reason why Wilsdorf set up his foundation was to devote a large portion of the future profits from the company to charities. Hans Wilsdorf, growing up as an orphan, was involved in a lot of philanthropic work during his lifetime. He was active in the social affairs of Geneva, which became his hometown, and he provided financial support within the humanitarian, philanthropic, and education sectors.

The Hans Wilsdorf Foundation has three key focus areas for its charity work which it describes in detail:

  • Social action
  • Training/education
  • Culture

“In accordance with the will of its founder, it deploys its activities on the territory of the canton of Geneva.”

Social Action

The Hans Wilsdorf Foundation supports social institutions active in the canton of Geneva. It also responds to requests for assistance that public or private social services make on behalf of people facing financial difficulties.

Training/education

The Hans Wilsdorf Foundation grants scholarships to students who cannot support themselves and contributes to the financing of measures promoting access to or a return to employment.

Culture

The Hans Wilsdorf Foundation contributes to Geneva’s cultural offer by supporting various institutions, particularly in the fields of music, theater, and visual arts.

Whilst the foundation has done and continues to do a lot of charity work in the city of Geneva, the foundation does charity work all over the world. Today, Rolex is active in the environment, culture, arts, science, culture, research, sports, and much more. Devoted to presenting all of the charitable work that Rolex and the foundation do, Rolex has set up the website Rolex.org where some of its contributions can be followed in detail.

Whilst many of Rolex’s charitable efforts get a lot of media attention, it’s safe to say that the organization does a lot of work under the radar in a secretive and discreet way. In a way, the foundation is as mythical, if not more, than the Rolex company itself. The foundation is involved in a lot of charitable efforts that few are aware of such as financing several food banks, scholarships, school prizes, elderly charities, and much more.

As secretive as many of its charitable efforts are, so is the main building from which the work is carried out. The charity is run from a discreet, secretive building in a Geneva suburb. Yet, despite the organization’s discreet nature, it distributes tons of money to all kinds of different charities and philanthropical purposes every year.

Rolex philanthropic work in Geneva

Over the years, the foundation has done a lot of philanthropic work in the city of Geneva, the hometown of Rolex. This is where the company was officially set up and Hans Wilsdorf has a lot to thank the city for. As such, the foundation has done a lot of good for Geneva.

In 2015, the Hans Wilsdorf foundation saved Servette FC, Geneva’s football club, from bankruptcy.

Moreover, it financed and managed both the design and execution of a new bridge on the  Arve River in Geneva. The bridge was named the Hans Wilsdorf bridge.

Another notable effort from the organization was in 2017 when it offered to contribute 100 of the 114 million needed for the HEAD, Geneva’s applied art school. The funds were needed for the school to get a brand new and large in-town campus.

Last but not least the foundation also acquired an iconic and well-known downtown Geneva building which was planned to be demolished to protect and preserve the beautiful architectural building and its history. The same was also done with a cinema theater.

These are just some of many examples of the charity work that the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation does that few are aware of. It’s safe to say that Rolex’s founder Hans Wilsdorf‘s decision of moving its ownership stake in the company to a foundation has contributed to a lot of good in Geneva and in the world. And it’s also safe to say that he would probably be very proud of everything that the foundation has done.

But to answer the question of how Much of Rolex’s Profits go to Charity, and if it is 90%, it is impossible to say. Foundations do not have to disclose their financials and therefore, the answer is not available to the general public. But what is safe to say, however, is that the foundation donates and invests a ton of resources into its charity work every year. This is reflected in everything it has done and continues to do. In addition, a lot of the work and charitable work that it does remains unknown to the public.

“He died in 1960, but his spirit lives on in the values he instilled in the company. They belong eternally to Hans Wilsdorf. They are Perpetual.”
